A few years ago, electric cars were the dogs of the automotive business, money-losing propositions that were either toys for the rich or economic sinkholes disguised as eco-warriors of the future. In three months, all that has changed.

The first bit of news that has electrified the car world is that Tesla-the poster car of the industry and long derided for losing money-- turned profitable, not just in its May quarter ($11.2 million) but for the one that ended in June as well. Then, it upped itself by paying off the $440 million government loan five years early-the only US-based auto company availing of the government's post-2008 slowdown recovery funds to do so.

The underpinning reality driving all of Tesla's success is simply that its Model S cars are flying out of its showrooms. The Reva's 100-km range is one of its biggest shortcomings. Its telematics-smartphone connectivity that allows you to, say, switch on the AC in your car from your office cubicle to pre-cool it using an app on your phone-was designed ahead of those in its global fancier peers. Its panels may not be carbon-fibre cool but are made of high resistance plastic and are dent-proof. Moreover, the panels come 'colour-impregnated', obviating the need for environmentally-destructive paints. Adding eco-oomph to the whole value proposition is its Bangalore factory, 35 per cent of which is powered by solar energy.

Sceptics used to deride electric cars for being just as carbon-intensive to produce as gasoline ones. Today, however, factories for electrics have none of the heavy machinery such as conveyer belts and robots used to put together fossil-fuelled vehicles, since much of the pieces for electrics are glued instead of welded. An article in MIT's technology review says "even when you factor in the carbon emissions and pollution from the power plants that produce the electricity to power the cars, and from manufacturing and disposal, electric cars produce about 40 percent less carbon dioxide and ozone than conventional cars."

While the world hasn't yet fully embraced electric cars that might change soon when Tesla introduces two other potentially game-changers: Model X, an SUV-minivan combo that will seat seven adults and sell for around $40,000 range. A sedan priced at about $35,000. Musk has also promised a newer version of the 'S' class with a 500-mile range. But if you're worried about affordability, other serious options continue to pop up with regularity. Apparently, while the Chevy Spark isn't quite as sleek as the i3, it does 95 per cent of what its German compatriot does, and for half the price to boot.

Once this nation saw higher education as a citadel of learning, growth and opportunity. Now student debt is being used as a cash cow to subsidize corporate tax breaks, while universities become incubators for corporate employees and cheap laboratories for private-sector patents.

The new student loan deal being cooked up in Washington is part of a larger picture. The forces of technology, globalization and wealth are calling the shots in government nowadays, and they've got higher education in their sights. Corporations want colleges and universities to serve them, not students.

In the dystopian future unfolding before our eyes, whole segments of the population are being offered up to the Corporate Machine. And unless we reject the corporate commodification of our common humanity, there's no end in sight.

As Andrew Leonard notes in Salon, the Internet is creating new and unjust markets for piece work. Online workers provide temporary "assistant" tasks for the well-to-do, competing for the jobs based on who's the most eager to please -and who's cheapest."Fancy Hands, "Mechanical Turk," "Task Rabbit": As the website names make clear, we're not talking about the dignity of labor here. And it's a buyer's market. The consulting group Deloitte waxes rhapsodic in a report for its corporate clients.

Then there's automation, often described (or mis-described) nowadays as "artificial intelligence" or "AI." A PBS program quotes Prof. Gary Marcus of NYU as saying, "Once somebody develops a good AI program it doesn't just replace one worker. It might replace millions of workers."

As Deloitte's consultants breathlessly put it: "Talent clouds make it possible to engage individuals anywhere in the world. AI and other technologies make it possible to automate knowledge work ... These trends are anticipated to shape the future of knowledge work."

"Knowledge work" is what we typically acquired a college education to perform. As the Los Angeles Times reports this week, it was "an unusual choice ... (for) a position usually held by an academic." The Times reports that unnamed officials felt Napolitano's Cabinet background "will help UC administer its federal energy and nuclear weapons labs and aid its federally funded research in medicine and other areas."

Energy and nuclear weapons research helps fund university budgets. It also leads to lucrative government contracts for corporations. Medical research leads to lucrative drug patents for Big Pharma.That's how the Corporate Machine works. It's all part of a decades-long pattern. Once we had a thriving middle class. Then the ability of working Americans to earn a living wage was systematically destroyed by a series of deliberate policy decisions.The minimum wage was frozen, driving ever-greater numbers of working people into poverty. The rights of employees to organize and negotiate were eroded, driving down wages even more. Elected leaders looked the other way as corporations gutted pension plans. NAFTA and other trade deals drove working wages down even further.

As middle-class Americans plunged further behind, their families and their communities fell with them. That's when the Corporate Machine learned something very important: It didn't need them. Business leaders discovered the Workerless Economy.There was good money to be made by using cheaper workers overseas and temporary and unskilled employees at home. The U.S. job market increasingly swung toward unskilled jobs, a trend that's been accelerated by the current "recovery" -- which is really a radical economic shift toward a corporate boom for the few, and away from prosperity for the many.

As the collapsing middle class lost much of its buying power, Corporate America discovered another way to make money: Why pay you to buy their goods when they can lend you the money instead?Americans plunged into ever-increasing cesspools of debt, fueled first by the Clinton stock market bubble and then by the bank-designed (and fraud driven) mortgage bubble. Deregulation meant that anybody with a large enough corporate presence could get in on the bank boom.

But what goes up must come down -- and you can be sure the Corporate State didn't plan to pick up the tab. Once they had been rescued -- by the same taxpayers they'd been exploiting -- financial executives went back to profiting from the declining wage base of the middle class.Building and selling things takes a lot of work. You have to hire and pay people, both to produce and ship your goods and so they can buy the goods you produce. CRRA Trash Museum

There's that old saying that goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure." There's also a more recent addendum to this saying that goes, one man's trash is another man's exhibit at the trash museum - literally.

Enter Dave Chameides. Originally from Connecticut, Chameides was living in California in 2008 when he decided to save all of his trash for one year in his basement. Chameides called this project 365 Days of Trash, and when the year was over he donated his trash to the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority Trash Museum in Hartford, where it has been incorporated into an exhibit.

All of the trash that Chameides C or Sustainable Dave, as he is also known C saved during the year is displayed in a large suitcase that sits on the floor in front of a mural painted by artist Ted Esselstyn of Higganum. Just as New York has its various boroughss that come with an accent distinctive to specific areas like Queens and the Bronx, the South has always had a broad spectrum of dialects, such as the beautiful Tidewater accent of Virginia and the Carolinas that Hollywood always tries so hard to duplicate and fails at miserably.

Other people might not be able to distinguish between them, but most of us who were brought up here can tell in a heartbeat if someone is from out of our area.

For instance, in bygone days when the crops were harvested, people were very familiar with the term laid by as in the crops are laid by for the year. Other terms have similarly been replaced with more familiar ones, partially because of the way people live and do business now. When crops were laid by they were harvested by hand, after tractors and combines were introduced, the term was gradually replaced with more modern terms, like harvested or the name frequently came from the actual piece of equipment, as in the garden has been tilled or in some areas, tillered.

Colloquialism include such everyday words in our area as gonna and wanna, or familiar phrases like as old as the hills or raining cats and dogs and dead as a doornail and aphorisms, or old adages, like, There's more than one way to skin a cat.

As a general rule, Colloquialism are specific to a geographical district. They are used in everyday conversation all over the South and, increasingly, the world, in informal online conversations.

One of the most recognized Colloquialism is the term we use here when referring to carbonated beverages. In the Upper Midwestern states and Canada, soft drinks are called pop, in other areas, notably the Northeastern and far Western United States, they are referred to as soda. I like that definition, shorthand. That, is seems to me, is what our Southern dialect is all about. A shorter way to say something or in some cases, a longer way to pronounce certain words.

The term dialect has two distinct meanings. The first refers to a variation of a language that is characteristic of a particular group who speak the language. The term is applied most often to regional speech patterns, but a dialect may also be defined by other factors, such as social class. The second usage is distinguished by its vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

Caribbean, when pronounced Ca-rib-ian sounds fine coming from people who live in the North, and some parts of the South, but most Southerners, who love to draw words out as long as possible, would sound odd pronouncing it that way. For us, the softer vowels and the rolling letters just naturally come out, Care Crib-e-an.

Other words that are perfectly acceptable but often pronounced differently, are potato and tomato. Can you just imagine pulling up to a farmer on the side of the road and the farmer tipping his cap and saying, The toe- mot-toes were just picked this mornin, or The po-ta-toes are really good this year.

The new Apple earphones have become an obsession with music lovers. The reason is that noise is not able to bleed through and fuse with music from the ear buds. Ive written before on the Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy and power poses Ive even tried them out, at some cost to my dignity but gain to my dry-cleaning pickup skills. The idea is that certain body stances, such as standing with your legs apart and your hands on your hips, or opening up your chest area, bathe your cortex in testosterone, a hormone associated with assertiveness and the willingness to take risks. Meanwhile, they also reduce cortisol, the stress hormone.

On the other hand, low power poses crossing your arms over your chest, say, or bunching your shoulders increase neural levels of cortisol and reduce testosterone, resulting in more stress and less confidence.How is this relevant to an afternoon frittered away in the company of cute pigs and Angry Birds? All that time spent hunched over a tiny screen might actually drain your confidence by forcing you into a low power position, according to a new study by Cuddy and Maarten Bos, a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard Business School. Bos and Cuddy asked 75 volunteers to perform a battery of tasks on one of four randomly assigned devices: an iPod touch small, an iPad a bit bigger, a Macbook Pro laptop even bigger, or an iMac desktop biggest.

"After five minutes of using the assigned device to take an online survey, each participant was given two dollars, along with the choice of keeping it or gambling it in a double-or-nothing gambling game with 50/50 odds. Next, the participant continued with a few other tasks and a final questionnaire, all on the assigned device."The question: Would people who played the betting game on bigger screens get a confidence boost from their superior, expansive posture? Would they be likelier to gamble?

The answer: Nope. "The experiments showed no apparent effect on participants gambling behavior, reports Nobel. But the study wasnt over. After the game, a researcher instructed each participant to wait while he the researcher fetched some forms. If I am not here in five minutes, please come get me at the front desk, he told them. Sneakily, though, he did not return after five minutes. He stood at the front desk for a maximum of 10 minutes, keeping track of whether and when each participant arrived to meet him. Nobel:

"Of the participants using a desktop computer, 94 percent took the initiative to fetch the experimenter. For those using the iPod Touch, only 50 percent left the room."

Whats more, among those who did leave the room, the amount of time they waited to do so increased as the size of the screen decreased. For instance, while iPod Touch users lingered for an average of 493 seconds before going off in search of the researcher, the average desktop user stuck around for only 341 seconds.

Whats going on here? Bos and Cuddy hypothesized that it takes some time for the effects of good or bad posture to sink in, which would explain why screen width didnt seem to influence betting behavior, but did correlate with how aggressively participants sought out the tardy experimenter. Previous studies show that people are more likely to gamble after assuming high power poses and less likely after taking up low power poses.

I also wonder whether using a personal device like an iPod Touch or iPad made the research setting seem less formal. If so, perhaps the researchers charge not to wait around, but to come find me at the front desk translated as friendly politeness, rather than as another instruction.

Canelo graduates to true champion

Alvarez was the victor, and probably deservedly so at the end of 12 intense and skillfully fought rounds -- although he surely didn't win by anything like the 118-109 card handed in by judge Stanley Christodoulou. A touch above a laptop screen

Let's admit it: Love it or hate it, Windows 8 was designed for touch screens. Its new facade, the colourful quilt of square tiles that I call TileWorld, was born for finger operation.

Unfortunately, most PCs don't have touch screens C "yet", says Microsoft, which insists that their time is coming. On the premise that Microsoft knows what it's talking about, one company after another has been introducing new computers, mostly laptops, with built-in touch screens for Windows 8.

Many of these machines have screens that flip, twist, rotate or detach so that you can use them either as laptops or as tablets. The HP Envy x2, Lenovo Yoga, Lenovo Helix, Dell XPS 12, Asus Vivo Tab, Asus Transformer Book and the Acer Iconia W510 all fall into this category.

That's not true of Microsoft's own Surface Pro, which packs Intel's powerful i5 processor. When I reviewed this sleek, attractive tablet/PC in February, I noted that it was an incredibly well-executed hybrid. It's a half-inch-thin, 1 kilogram tablet, but the kickstand in back and the keyboard/screen cover in front let you turn it into a real Windows desktop PC in seconds. Its limitations are a feeble battery, undersize keyboard and limited storage (only 23 gigabytes in the $US900 model).

Which brings us to this piece of reader mail, which arrived shortly after that column was published: "How could you write about the Surface Pro without mentioning the Samsung Ativ PC Pro ($US1200)? It has the same Intel processor as the Surface Pro, but much better battery life, bigger screen, bigger keyboard, 1080p screen and more storage. My jaw dropped. It's obvious that Microsoft had put every droplet of engineering talent it had into the Surface Pro. It's Microsoft's shining golden boy, its proof that Windows 8 isn't a tragic misfire. Could Samsung really have something better already?

The full name of the machine he was describing is the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T, which at 18 syllables sounds as if it were named by the federal government. All of the Smart PC Pro's guts C battery, processor, memory, cameras and so on C are in the screen. They make the top half of the laptop weirdly heavier and thicker than the bottom half, which contains only the keyboard. In other words, in laptop mode, the whole thing is top-heavy.

Some rival detachable-screen laptops are even more top-heavy C the screen portion flops away from you at the slightest touch. Then again, some of the Samsung's competitors also incorporate a second battery in the keyboard base. That helps with both battery life and weight distribution.

When you detach the screen, the tablet in your hands feels off. It's too thick, too heavy, too plasticky; the iPad and the Surface have spoiled us. And it's a wide, thin rectangle that suits movies well but feels ridiculous when turned 90 degrees. You feel as if you're holding a diving board.

The other unattractive aspect of this design is that both halves of the machine are, in effect, the ugly "bottom." Both the underside of the keyboard and the back of the tablet bear the usual painted-on paragraph of FCC notices and logos; the back of the tablet also bears an archipelago of unattractive flaps, vents and stickers. Where were the designers of Samsung's gorgeous, thin,Laser engraving and laser parkingguidance for materials like metal, real laptops when this thing was sketched out?

The screen is crisp and bright; it offers 1080p resolution, the highest kind of high definition. It's a touch screen, of course, intended for use with your fingers,Online shopping for solarpanelcells. but there's also a plastic stylus tucked away near a corner. You can use that pen for making handwritten notes and for navigating Samsung's homegrown suite of Windows programs, like the baffling S-Note document-making app.

You can project the screen image to a TV or projector either through a cable (micro HDMI) or wirelessly, using WiDi. That's a technology that, like Apple's AirPlay, requires a $100 receiver connected to the TV or projector.

The speed of this machine is excellent; it's about what you'd expect from a high-end ultrabook, or from Microsoft's Surface Pro. And there's no denying the pleasure and utility of being able to run real Windows software C your Photoshops, your Quickens, your iTunes C on a touch-screen tablet. Of course, as a Windows 8 machine, this device also runs the new-style, full-screen TileWorld apps; the Samsung comes with several preinstalled, like Netflix and Amazon Kindle Reader.

Samsung says the Smart PC offers an eight-hour battery; in the real world, five hours is more like it. That's better than the Surface Pro but still nothing like the all-day life you'd get from a real laptop. You'd also get longer battery life, and pay hundreds less, for hybrids with Intel's Atom processor instead. But that chip is much, much slower.

No question about it: The Samsung beats the Surface Pro in a few categories. You get a keyboard with more spacious keys and deeper travel. You get a bigger screen (11.6 inches versus 10.6). You get more storage. And you can adjust the screen angle on the Samsung; the built-in kickstand on the Surface has a fixed angle. That said, the Samsung's hinge doesn't permit as wide a screen angle as real laptops do.

Worse, you're paying full laptop-plus-tablet price for a machine that's not especially good at being either one. For the $US1200 you'd pay for this Samsung, you could get a very nice laptop that doesn't leave out laptoppy features like an Ethernet jack and a full-size slot for your camera's memory card.

Those compromises aren't Samsung's special achievement, by the way; just about all of the hybrid laptop/tablets have the same problem. Adding a touch screen and a detaching or hinging mechanism can't help adding weight, bulk, complexity and price. Something's gotta give.

Word on the street is that neither Windows 8 nor Microsoft's Surface tablets are selling very well. It's a safe bet that the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T won't turn that trend around. That goes triple for its lower-powered, less expensive sibling, the 500T.

In other words, it may be that computer shoppers aren't especially interested in paying a steep price C in dollars, features and looks C for the ability to turn their laptops into tablets or vice versa. It wouldn't be the first time that manufacturers were more excited about a category than their customers turned out to be.

So how big a part does luck play in business?

Any business that tells you its all hard work and no luck is completely lying to you, is the reply. You do need some luck, and I always preach to the guys working here about making your own luck. In snakes and ladders luck is a good thing but its not something you can build a sustainable business on. Chess on the other hand is a game where you make your own luck, by taking advantage of your position and using it to build for the future. Were playing chess not snakes and ladders.

But of course there are no animal spirits in chess and the whims that the markets are in thrall to are difficult to insure against. Apples last-quarter 2012 results C record turnover at $54.5bn and record profits at $13.1bn C were greeted with a thrashing by the markets that wiped $50bn off its share value. How can you deal with such unpredictability? You cant really, he answers. Its really about managing expectations: if you say the train is due at 10 past 10 but it arrives at 10.20, its late, but if you say itll arrive at 10.30 everybodys happy but really its about being open and transparent with the market about the way people can estimate our business. The recent explosion of bad press, which some Vatican experts say is fed by carefully orchestrated leaks meant to weaken some Papal contenders, also speak to Benedict’s own difficulties in governance, which analysts say he is trying to address, albeit belatedly, with several high-profile personnel changes.

In a strongly-worded rebuke and rebuttal, the Vatican Secretariat of State issued a rare statement at the weekend calling it “deplorable” that ahead of the conclave, there was “a widespread distribution of often unverified, unverifiable or completely false news stories that cause serious damage to persons and institutions.”

It went further to compare the news reports to past attempts by foreign states to exert pressure on Papal elections, saying that any effort to skew the choice of the next Pope by trying to shape public opinion were “based on judgments that do not typically capture the spiritual aspect of the moment that the church is living.”

Benedict had addressed at least one past scandal with the February 15 appointment of a new head of the Vatican Bank. It is less clear why he re-assigned a powerful Vatican diplomatic official to a posting outside Rome, though experts say it diminished the official’s role in helping to steer Vatican policy.

At the conclusion of the Vatican’s Lenten spiritual retreat, a Papal contender, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, spoke darkly of the “divisions, dissent, careerism, jealousies” that he said plagued the Vatican hierarchy. The recent spate of news reports were linked to an earlier scandal in which the Pope’s butler stole confidential documents, an episode considered one of the gravest security breaches in the modern history of the church.

One in three 'not saving any money'

The tough economy and the need to help other family members struggling with high living costs means that many people are living on a "financial precipice", with little or nothing to fall back on, Scottish Widows said.

Some 31% of people said that they are not currently placing any cash aside, although this is a marginal improvement compared with a year ago when 32% of consumers said this. However, only one in nine (11%) of those surveyed expects the economy to pick up this year and 17% have no money to fall back on at all, the Savings and Investment report said.
