The seventh annual, three-day fundraiser for the Church Health
Center, providing health care for the working uninsured, will kick off
that Thursday evening with a VIP barbecue at Ardent Studios.
“While
it’s a VIP barbecue for donors, bands, sponsors and friends of the
center, there is a public ticket component so folks from the community
can purchase a ticket, or a table for that matter,” said Jeff Hulett,
public relations and communications coordinator for the Church Health
Center.
The following night sees a bill of four bands at Young
Avenue Deli in Cooper-Young, featuring the Side Street Steppers, Reemus
Bodeemus, Hope Clayburn’s Soul Scrimmage and Kaleidophonix, as well as
DJ Devin Steel between sets. Saturday puts a new spin on the raucous
tradition with a family-friendly event at Overton Park in the afternoon.
“It’s free, but we’re encouraging donations and beer will be for sale,” Hulett said.We sell bestsmartcard and

various kids activities, arts and crafts tables, the Grizzlies’ bounce
houses and a bake sale. It all will be happening close to the newly
renovated and opened playground, with an atmosphere Hulett compares to

concert at the Levitt Shell, featuring up-and-comers Mark Stuart with
Kait Lawson, as well as Patrick Dodd, John Kilzer and Kirk Whalum.You

Hulett said.The show is free but, Hulett adds, “We’re going to have an
army of Levitt Shell and Church Health Center volunteers out there

Along
with the music shows and children’s activities, an online auction is
ongoing and has already raised close to $2,000. T-shirts are for sale

Marvin Stockwell and Hulett, and their friend J.D. Reager, all Memphis
musicians.
“We weren’t fundraisers; we’re still not. We’re not
part of the fundraising department,” said Stockwell, communications
director for the organization. “Rock for Love was a project that we
didn’t necessarily have time to do, but we almost viewed as our
volunteer project.”
Reager is solely a volunteer to the Church
Health Center.The first hurdle was a name, and as Stockwell cast about
for something quick and catchy, he kept coming back to the overarching
theme of the Church Health Center’s mission to the community, reading it
in Bible verses and seeing it manifested in the sculptures on the
center’s Peabody Avenue grounds: Love. Playing off the name of a
fundraiser already in place, Concert of Love, which featured the music
of church choirs, Stockwell, a hard-playing guitarist and singer
himself, coined Rock for Love. The three leveraged their years as
working musicians to put together a lineup.
Since the first
year, when funds raised totaled about $7,500, the total has climbed each
year, with last year seeing $50,000. As impressive as that is, it’s a
mere drop in the open guitar case for the Church Health Center’s annual
budget of $16 million.Rock for Love, however,A glassbottles is
a machine used primarily for the folding of paper. has a different
mission. It is the largest event the center puts on, and it’s the
awareness, Hulett says, on which you can’t put a price.
“The
positive damage we want to do is in friend-raising and
awareness-raising, and saying, ‘Hey, we’re here to serve you if you need
us,’ or we’re sowing seeds trying to get that next generation of
support,” he said. “These young folks that are coming to the shows, in
five, 10, 15 years, are going to be the people that will have the
capacity to give.”
Stockwell has been thrilled over the years
with the eagerness for involvement of the musicians and bands – part of
the very core of those the Church Health Center seeks to help – and the
question of its success is no question at all for him.
“Why has
it grown? Because Memphis is generous,” he said. “Our music community
and our creative community are generous, and they want to give back, and
they see that the Church Health Center is an organization that’s helped
them.”
And for some people it's going to feel too restrictive.
You can't start off playing everything right away as you could at
launch; you have to learn how to walk before you learn how to run. The
quests do give you direction, even though most of them are there to
guide you to something and then let you ignore it as you wish.
There's
more structure, but it doesn't clamp down on you. There are lots of
options for "what do I do now," but the game doesn't demand you take
part in any of them. Not everyone is going to like that, nor is everyone
going to like the idea that the game liberally borrows ideas from other
games and combines them into a new whole. Some are from distinct games
(FATES resemble the eponymous rifts of RIFT, guildleves closely resemble
radio missions from City of Heroes), others simply come from the
structure of most mainstream MMOs over the past several years. This is a
game that strives for polish and innovative combinations, and few
individual elements will strike veteran players as novel.

They make our frozen pizzas, sort the recycling from our trash, cut our vegetables and clean our imported fish. They unload clothing and toys made overseas and pack them to fill our store shelves. They are as important to the global economy as shipping containers and Asian garment workers.
Many get by on minimum wage, renting rooms in rundown houses, eating dinners of beans and potatoes, and surviving on food banks and taxpayer-funded health care. They almost never get benefits and have little opportunity for advancement.
Across America, temporary work has become a mainstay of the economy, leading to the proliferation of what researchers have begun to call temp towns. They are often dense Latino neighborhoods teeming with temp agencies. Or they are cities where it has become nearly impossible even for whites and African-Americans with vocational training to find factory and warehouse work without first being directed to a temp firm.
In June, the Labor Department reported that the nation had more temp workers than ever before: 2.7 million. Overall, almost one-fifth of the total job growth since the recession ended in mid-2009 has been in the temp sector, federal data shows. But according to the American Staffing Association,You must not use the plasticmoulds without being trained. the temp industrys trade group, the pool is even larger: Every year, a tenth of all U.S. workers finds a job at a staffing agency.
The proportion of temp workers in the labor force reached its peak in early 2000 before the 2001 slump and then the Great Recession. In Joliet, Ill., one temp agency operated out of a motel meeting room once a week, supplying labor to the layers of logistics contractors at one of Walmarts biggest warehouses. In Greenville County, S.C., near BMWs U.S. manufacturing plant, one in 11 workers was a temp in 2011. A decade before, it was one in 22.
In temp towns, it is not uncommon to find warehouses with virtually no employees of their own. Many temp workers say they have worked in the same factory day in and day out for years. Jos Miguel Rojo, for example, packed frozen pizzas for a Walmart supplier every day for eight years as a temp until he was injured last summer and lost his job.

JCB announces three new backhoes
English
equipment manufacturer JCB invited us over the pond earlier this month
for a look at a wide range of new and refreshed machines. Heres a
rundown of the models relevant to the North American market.
For the rental market or budget-conscious contractors, JCB now offers what it calls a low-spec 3CX backhoe with a 14-foot dig depth. This comes with a standard open cab, synchroshuttle manual transmission, manual levers and a 74 horsepower, Tier 4 Final Ecomax engine.
A triple-gear hydraulic pump allows the operator to drop the engine speed but still maintain high hydraulic flow rates for demanding applications. The cab is designed with a reinforced C-pillar, which eliminates the sightline restrictions of a A- or B-pillar while still meeting ROPS/FOPS requirements. If you like, you can spec the 3CX with a fully glazed cab option, extended dipper stick and factory installed theft protection devices.
The next two steps up bring additional horsepower and options with backhoes JCB calls Supers.The plasticcard is not only critical to professional photographers. The 3CX Super offers a 91- or a 109-horsepower Tier 4 Interim Ecomax engine, a standard powershift transmission and new 44-gallon-per-minute variable-flow hydraulic pump. The 4CX Super comes with the 109-horsepower engine and also the 44 gpm pump. The Supers can also be speced with a 14, 15 or 17 foot dig depth options.
JCB has also offered a range of options when it comes to its backhoe controls. You can spec any of the three new models with what the company calls its classic controls or mechanical/wobble stick style.

A transmission disconnect feature built into the service brake and a viscous coupled, on-demand engine cooling fan also promote fuel efficiency. The 411 comes with a 91-horsepower Ecomax engine. And again, theres no DPF to concern yourself with on these machines.
JCB increased the size of the cab on the 417 by inserting a driveshaft between the engine and transmission. The cab is essentially the same size as the bigger 427, 437, 457 and 467 models. Better sealing of the cab and other design enhancements have dropped the sound levels to no more than 70 decibels, and climate control is offered as an option. The new joystick is servo controlled and has electro-hydraulic proportional controls, activated by a roller switch for the auxiliary circuits. The rollers tie into constant flow hydraulics which can change the speed of your attachments (i.e. a sweeper broom) on the fly.
On the business end, the HT or high torque loader arm uses parallel lift geometry giving you unobstructed visibility through the middle of the arms to the attachments and pickup points compared to a Z-bar configuration. It also gives you constant torque throughout the bucket dumping angle.
Operating weights have been increased slightly. The 417 weighs 21,100 pounds and the 411 comes in at 18,000 pounds. The 416 came with standard and super high lift arm options. The 417 will offer a high lift configuration between those two, with a pin height of 12.5 feet and a dump height of 9.6 feet when equipped with a 2.1 cubic yard bucket. The 411 is offered in the standard and super high lift configurations.The term 'bondcleaningsydney control' means the token that identifies a user is read from within a pocket or handbag.
The company also showed us its new 467 wheel loader, which is a new size class for JCB, and more suited for aggregates and quarry applications. But it only comes at present with a Tier 3 engine, which means it cant be sold into countries adhering to Tier 4 diesel emissions regulations. Its a brand new, clean-sheet-of-paper design with a 7.6 ton payload and a Z-bar loader linkage. Company officials say the 467 will get a Tier 4 Interim engine next year, but couldnt be specific on dates.
JCBs big reveal for the June press conference was a brand new engine and the companys first six cylinder engine, the Dieselmax 672. Alas, its only a Tier 2 model and will only be sold in to countries that share our super stringent diesel emissions regulations. This essentially means China, Russia and Africa.
The Dieselmax 672 comes with electronic control, Delphi common rail fuel injection and fixed geometry turbocharging. The 7.2 liter engine offers horsepower ratings of 188, 221, and 225 with a maximum output of 302 horsepower. Maximum torque tops the charts at 885 foot-pounds. The engines boast a 500-hour service interval and will be built in the companys Derbyshire, England factory.

The 7.2 liter engine offers horsepower ratings of 188, 221, and 225 with a maximum output of 302 horsepower. Maximum torque tops the charts at 885 foot-pounds. The engines boast a 500-hour service interval and will be built in the companys Derbyshire, England factory.

Never the rail deal
Sydney's
monorail, which runs in a 3.6-kilometre loop around the fringe of the
city and through Darling Harbour, which has carriages that might have

The other proposal was a light rail line, put forward by firms Transfield and Comeng. The light rail would be two lanes to extend from Pyrmont and across Pyrmont Bridge. The lanes would then head down Sussex Street and Hickson Road to Circular Quay in one direction. But Brereton backed the monorail. Almost immediately after calling for proposals, he began rubbishing the light rail in public. It would be a return to the street-clogging trams of the 1960s, he said. Smythe recalls a meeting of a cabinet subcommittee including Brereton as minister for public works, Carr as planning minister and Barrie Unsworth as transport minister to discuss the competing proposals, with their department heads and advisers in the room.
''As I recall at that first meeting we were discussing ways each proposal might be evaluated and compared but the matter went no further as it all ended when Laurie Brereton came into the meeting and announced that the decision had been made to go with the monorail, essentially to the proponent with the most clout or influence, led by TNT,'' Smythe said.
Asked about this episode last year, and whether he had supported the tram line, Carr said he had only a slight memory of it.
''Of course the route it took would not have got people directly from the middle of the CBD into the new retail activity planned for Darling Harbour but linked the Quay with DH,From black tungsten wedding rings for men to diamond luggagetag. which I guess would have been seen as a bit circuitous,'' the Foreign Minister said of the light rail in an email.

I saved a toddler trapped on a roof
I had plenty of practice climbing drainpipes as a teenager, when I'd
regularly use one to access a girlfriend's bedroom. It wasn't a skill I
expected to need again on a sunny bank holiday more than two decades
later.
I'd arranged to meet my wife and a couple of friends in the beer garden of a local hotel. As I approached, I could hear raised voices. I thought maybe a group of people had drunk too much and things were about to turn nasty, but as I walked into the garden, I saw everyone looking up, including my wife and friends. Following their gaze, I saw a child in a red hat perched on top of a roof jutting out from the hotel. It made no sense C how had he got there?
I realised the people in the garden had arranged themselves underneath, in the hope that one of them would be able to catch him if he fell. From the other side of the roof, I heard a woman's voice imploring him to sit down and keep still. It was the boy's mother, who had tried to climb up to him and become stranded halfway along a flat roof.
The child ignored his mother's voice and his every movement brought a fresh gasp of anxiety from onlookers. The fire brigade had been called, but no one knew how long they'd take. I imagined the fire engine working its way across the city, slowed by holiday traffic. The thought of looking on helplessly as the boy lost his footing made me feel sick. The knot in the pit of my stomach was too much to bear C scanning the side of the building, I quickly worked out the quickest way up and made for the drainpipe.
It was old and looked as if it might break away from the wall, but I hauled myself up, grabbed on to a gutter that cracked ominously as it took my weight, then quickly heaved myself on to the tiles. Above me, the child paid me little attention and didn't appear to be frightened at all. He was younger than I'd thought C no older than two C and the roof was steeper than it had appeared from the ground. The situation suddenly seemed even more grave. I realised I'd be unable to predict a toddler's responses, and imagined diving across to grab him if he stumbled, knowing there would be nothing to arrest our fall if I did.
My only option now was to keep climbing. I launched myself upwards and tried to ignore the tiles fracturing beneath me, a couple slipping free underfoot and clattering down.

Duluth Grill to add an urban orchard
The plan is that when Tom Hanson, owner of Duluth Grill, needs fresh plums for a pie, he can simply walk out to the restaurant parking lot and pick them.
Thats because plum trees will be part of a new parking lot orchard at the restaurant at 118 S. 27th Avenue W. that will provide hundreds of pounds of fresh produce each year but also act as a buffer for rainwater that runs off the parking lot and into nearby Miller Creek.
The planned urban orchard will be 140 feet long, 12 feet wide and, in addition to plum trees, will include grape vines, black-cap raspberries, lingonberries, kiwi, apricots, grapes, choke cherries and much more.
The plan also calls for a nearby rain garden in the restaurants back parking lot that will filter more than 1 million gallons of rainwater annually that now runs off the restaurant roof and parking lot as well as off the nearby Motel 6 and Mielke Electric building directly into Miller Creek.
The project will add an island of trees, shade, flowers, birds and butterflies in what for decades has been a sea of blacktop in Duluths Lincoln Park neighborhood. The added green space will help cool and clean water entering the creek right before it pours into the Duluth harbor and, eventually, Lake Superior.
Duluth Grill has been a pioneer in the effort to reduce waste, recycle, compost and reduce energy usage as well as reduce its carbon emissions footprint, the stuff blamed for global warming. And the restaurant has been using organic, locally produced foods for years, including stuff from the gardens already scattered around the building and at Hansons home nearby.
Were already producing a years worth of basil and a years worth of rhubarb, so were producing what we use. Were at about half a years worth of apples. And we keep adding more things, Hanson said. I dont know if well ever get to 100 percent; thats not really the goal. But the goal is to supply as much of our own food, or at least have it locally supplied, as possible.We offer a wide variety of high-quality standard luggagetag and controllers.
The orchard and rain garden effort, which will get underway later this summer, is expected to cost more than $20,000. But the project already has a head start. The restaurant won a $5,000 grant from the Hobart Center for Food Service Sustainability, topping more than 20 other projects nationally, and another $8,000 grant from the South St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District.
We already have a Miller Creek restoration project going through the Clean Water Land and Legacy Fund, and part of that is working with a business to develop best management practices for runoff near the stream, said Kate Kubiak, conservation specialist for the district. They already have so much going on at the restaurant in terms of sustainability, and they had a plan ready for this project, so this was an easy choice. And the creek goes right behind their restaurant, so theres a direct impact and direct benefit. Its going to have high visibility. A lot of people are going to see whats going on.
To raise the rest of the money, Duluth Grill has embarked on an unusual effort to raise $10,000 in donations from customers and other Northlanders who see the broader community benefits in what the owners are trying to do.This model includes 2 flush mounted reverse groundmount. Its a little bit different, trying to get people to give us money for a project. But the response has been very positive, Hanson said. To be honest, there is no way to make this pay on a traditional profit-and-loss sheet. These kinds of projects never pay for themselves. But people see what were trying to do and want to be part of it.
Francois Medion, the restaurants farm manager, said the project will take about three days to build, probably in late July or early August. It will take detailed planning and preparation to rip up the blacktop and install the orchard without disrupting peak summer traffic, he noted. Medion expects the parking lot orchard will be an educational tool by planting varieties not normally found in the Northland, such as Siberian Kiwi.
People wont see these varieties anywhere else around here, he said. Thats good not just for teaching what can be planted here, but also give the restaurant some produce that will be unique, that people cant get anywhere else.
Hanson said he has more plans after the parking lot orchard is built. He wants to build a green roof on the restaurant, where vegetables would be grown. And hes thinking about redoing the front parking lot with a pervious surface that rain can soak through rather than run off into the creek.
Ive pretty much turned my yard at home into a farm now, Hanson said, noting hes even added a fish tank to grow pacu, a warm-water fish, for the restaurants menu.
This whole effort takes a lot of work. Its a learning experience, he said. But the restaurant business can really burn people out. This has made it fun for me to come into work every day.

The added green space will help cool and clean water entering the creek right before it pours into the Duluth harbor and, eventually, Lake Superior.
Duluth Grill has been a pioneer in the effort to reduce waste, recycle, compost and reduce energy usage as well as reduce its carbon emissions footprint, the stuff blamed for global warming. And the restaurant has been using organic, locally produced foods for years, including stuff from the gardens already scattered around the building and at Hansons home nearby.
Were already producing a years worth of basil and a years worth of rhubarb, so were producing what we use. Were at about half a years worth of apples. And we keep adding more things, Hanson said. I dont know if well ever get to 100 percent; thats not really the goal. But the goal is to supply as much of our own food, or at least have it locally supplied, as possible.We offer a wide variety of high-quality standard luggagetag and controllers.
The orchard and rain garden effort, which will get underway later this summer, is expected to cost more than $20,000. But the project already has a head start. The restaurant won a $5,000 grant from the Hobart Center for Food Service Sustainability, topping more than 20 other projects nationally, and another $8,000 grant from the South St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District.
We already have a Miller Creek restoration project going through the Clean Water Land and Legacy Fund, and part of that is working with a business to develop best management practices for runoff near the stream, said Kate Kubiak, conservation specialist for the district. They already have so much going on at the restaurant in terms of sustainability, and they had a plan ready for this project, so this was an easy choice. And the creek goes right behind their restaurant, so theres a direct impact and direct benefit. Its going to have high visibility. A lot of people are going to see whats going on.
To raise the rest of the money, Duluth Grill has embarked on an unusual effort to raise $10,000 in donations from customers and other Northlanders who see the broader community benefits in what the owners are trying to do.This model includes 2 flush mounted reverse groundmount. As of Friday afternoon the project had 20 people pledging $955, with 28 days to go.
Its a little bit different, trying to get people to give us money for a project. But the response has been very positive, Hanson said. To be honest, there is no way to make this pay on a traditional profit-and-loss sheet. These kinds of projects never pay for themselves. But people see what were trying to do and want to be part of it.
Francois Medion, the restaurants farm manager, said the project will take about three days to build, probably in late July or early August. It will take detailed planning and preparation to rip up the blacktop and install the orchard without disrupting peak summer traffic, he noted. Medion expects the parking lot orchard will be an educational tool by planting varieties not normally found in the Northland, such as Siberian Kiwi.
People wont see these varieties anywhere else around here, he said. Thats good not just for teaching what can be planted here, but also give the restaurant some produce that will be unique, that people cant get anywhere else.
Hanson said he has more plans after the parking lot orchard is built. He wants to build a green roof on the restaurant, where vegetables would be grown. And hes thinking about redoing the front parking lot with a pervious surface that rain can soak through rather than run off into the creek.
Ive pretty much turned my yard at home into a farm now, Hanson said, noting hes even added a fish tank to grow pacu, a warm-water fish, for the restaurants menu.
This whole effort takes a lot of work. Its a learning experience, he said. But the restaurant business can really burn people out. This has made it fun for me to come into work every day.
