A Seattle-area couple is in custody for allegedly holding captive and
torturing the man's 13-year-old brother for three months -- including
driving a nail through the boy's hand and keeping him in a cellar for
days without food, the prosecutor said Wednesday.
Brandon Gunn,
27, and his wife Viviana, 34, are in the Kitsap County Jail outside
Seattle on $500,000 bail each, charged with kidnapping, unlawful
imprisonment and four counts of assault, county prosecutor Cami Lewis
said.Brandon's brother is from Atlanta and went in May to stay with his
brother for the summer, Kitsap County Deputy Sheriff Scott Wilson said.
"We've
been crying for days," the teen's aunt, Marsha Thomas-Jones, told CNN
Atlanta affiliate WSB. "My sister is devastated."The alleged torture
began as early as May 1 and lasted until the teenager escaped from his
brother's cellar two weeks ago, according to the prosecutor's complaint,
filed Tuesday.Thomas-Jones said the family suspected something was
wrong months ago when communication ceased, and it tried unsuccessfully
to get law enforcement involved early, WSB reported.
The
attorney for Brandon Gunn, Michele Taylor, was given the case only
Wednesday and has not received any discovery documents, said her
paralegal, Samantha Badkin. She said they don't expect to speak to their
client until at least next Tuesday.A voicemail message for Viviana
Gunn's attorney, Jeniece Lacross, was not returned late Wednesday.
According
to the probable cause certificate filed Monday by the Kitsap County
Sheriff's Office, the boy was sent to the Gunns' garage where he was
duct-taped to a chair with tape over his eyes and mouth, then beaten in
the head, torso and legs with a baseball bat and metal bars, losing
consciousness at times.Another time, the couple put the boy's hand in a
bench vise, tightened it, and drove a nail through the his hand with a
hammer, the certificate says. The boy said that time, he could see them
doing it.
The Gunns duct-taped his hands and hung him from a
rafter in the garage, then beat him; they also stapled his right palm
with a construction stapler, heated a knife and cut him with it,
according to the certificate.The couple forced the boy to stay naked in a
portable dog kennel twice for two to three days at a time, with no food
or water, the certificate says. He also was forced to stay in the dark
cellar for four days, and when he escaped to get food, he was punished
by being beaten with a baseball bat, it says.
The boy said the
couple called the abuse "punishment sessions" for not doing chores or
breaking household rules, and that the "sessions" would last for two to
three hours, according to Deputy Sheriff Wilson.When the boy escaped, he
had been duct-taped but managed to escape by moving his hands in front

For Some Kids, Summer Camp Includes
The idea of taking a child to prison for a week may bring to mind
visions of “Scared Straight” programs. But the Father to Child Summer
Camp Behind Bars does just that — and the goal is to let kids bond with
their fathers, who might be incarcerated far from their families.The
unique summer camp lodges children at a campground near prisons in
Maryland and North Carolina, according to Here & Now, the show from
WBUR and NPR. The kids visit their fathers in prison each day.
And the camp has a fan in a boy named Kobe, who tells Here & Now co-host Robin Young that his father invited him to attend during a phone call from prison.“I was actually a little nervous,” Kobe tells Robin. “Not really much about the prison. I was really more nervous about seeing him, than the prison itself. Because I hadn’t seen him in a few years.”
As the Hope House website explains, the children don’t spend the night in prison — they stay at a nearby campground, complete with s’mores. But they’re with their fathers for several hours each day, doing crafts and other activities.The program also has requirements for which prisoners can take part, based on their behavior and the offenses for which they’re being punished. Each camp session includes about 15 children.
Asked about his experience, Kobe says he’s happy he went.“It was great. We hit it off from the start,” he tells Robin. “We talked about family and our interests, and things like that. Conservation Groups File
A coalition of local conservation groups could soon be part of North
Carolina’s lawsuit against Duke / Progress Energy. In an action filed
earlier this month, the state says the utility giant illegally
contaminated groundwater at its Sutton coal-fired plant, just outside of
Wilmington. The Southern Environmental Law Center filed the request to
intervene yesterday – in order for Cape Fear River Watch, the Sierra
Club, and the Waterkeeper Alliance to have a seat at the table.
Duke Energy is now facing legal action concerning every one of its 14 coal-fired plants in North Carolina – including the Sutton Plant near Wilmington. The Southern Environmental Law Center has successfully intervened in two other suits concerning coal ash pollution near Asheville and Charlotte-area facilities.
Frank Holleman is a Senior Attorney representing the conservation groups. “We want to intervene to be sure that there are independent citizens’ groups that are at the table pushing to clean up the coal ash pollution of the water resources of the Wilmington area that have been caused at the Sutton Plant.”
Both the State and the SELC say Duke has contaminated groundwater with toxic pollutants that threaten public health and water resources – including the drinking water supply of a nearby low-income, racially-diverse community that’s dependent on wells.
The company plans to retire its coal-fired facility by the end of this year. Once the ash basins are no longer in use,A cleaningservic resembles a credit card in size and shape. Duke Energy’s Erin Culbert says the multi-year decommissioning process will begin. The first step: an engineering study that evaluates the site-specific hydrology.

There's the obvious one, because it wasn't a very good game until the

"That's a tough situation," said Brackenridge. "He's been fighting this for years. Just prayers are out for him and hope it's nothing too bad."Bagg was on the minds of many of his teammates, including receiver Geroy Simon who caught his 1000th career pass in the game, who admits he actually has an admiration for Bagg despite the age difference because of the work he puts in day in and out.

Courthouse monument to close part of Augusta's State
Police are urging drivers to avoid State Street today, as a section
of the road will be shut down while workers install a new monument on
the lawn in front of the Kennebec County Courthouse.
Augusta police Lt. Kevin Lully said State Street will be closed from Winthrop Street to Weston Street. The closure is expected to begin at 8 a.m. and last for about four hours. No traffic or parking will be allowed on the closed section, Lully said.
The monument is a life-size bronze statue of Melville Weston Fuller, who was born in Augusta and became the eighth chief justice of the United States. A foundation is already in place, Kennebec County Administrator Robert Devlin said. Preserving That Great Performance
Artists, editors and the occasional MTV producer are making
pilgrimages to its fifth-floor gallery, where the museums XFR STN
project helps them preserve, and in some cases, excavate, artworks
stored on floppy disks, videocassettes and other obsolete media.Its like
Noahs ark, said Ben Fino-Radin, a digital conservator for the project.
Some of this stuff hasnt been seen in 30 years.
It can be something of a random archaeological dig, dependent on what is brought in by the artists seeking free one-on-one time with technicians to digitize their work. Most of it is then uploaded to archive.org, the Internets Wayback Machine, where it is available for anybody to experience.
The project, pronounced transfer station, runs through Sept. 8 and allows anyone to bring in their work after signing up on the museums Web site. Its also open to museumgoers, who can see an exhibition of retro videos, posters and machinery, and witness the artists and technicians midrestoration. Along the way theres a healthy dose of nostalgia, as well as the smack of recognition that time, or at least technology, travels rather fast.
In the space of a few hours you go from U-matic, an analog tape deck from the 1970s, to watching it on your phone, Mr. Fino-Radin said.A recent tour revealed how art buried in the audiovisual graveyard lives again.
At a tower of outdated machines a U-matic, an oscilloscope Walter Forsberg, an audiovisual conservator for the project, worked with the artist Matthew Geller to digitize a tape of the artists Kiki Smith, Rebecca Allen and Ellen Cooper fronting the Cardboard Air Band in a performance at the Kitchen. Mr. Geller guessed that it was from 1981, when the artists were at the beginning of their careers. Even so, the footage, of men and women in skinny pants and floppy bangs singing and playing cardboard instruments, looked remarkably contemporary.
Its certainly interesting seeing a lot of this stuff, with the knowledge now of what comes after it, said Mr. Geller, a site-specific installation artist. We were all in our 20s, and no one ever imagined being famous until our 30s or 40s.Museum visitors watched footage from the Monday/Wednesday/Friday Video Club, an art collective begun in the 1980s, led by the artists and writers Alan W. Moore and Michael Carter. The club was spun out of Colab, Collaborative Projects Inc., a downtown group that also helped start ABC No Rio, a cultural space still kicking on the Lower East Side.
Andrea Callard, a Colab artist, has helped digitize hours of tapes from the MWF club that span a 10-year period. In 2004 New York University acquired her papers, including the first videos she made in the 1970s and 80s. I was at a point in my life when I really wanted to see what that stuff looked like, she said, taking a break from her headphones and monitor. If you want to experience the continuity of your work, thats important. Its really fun to see it. Now they have a new audience. Its like a second life.

Mixing Mediums at Loveland's Sculpture in the Park
Randy Mulder's "Time Machines" were a big hit during Sculpture in the
Park on Saturday, but 30 years ago when Loveland's famous annual event
started, his mixed media pieces would have been out of place among
exhibitors.
Mulder, a Wellington resident who has participated in the event for four years, creates his working clock sculptures out of found items -- light bulbs, plastic tubing, buttons, knobs, you name it -- and said the idea is to create something that looks like a lay person's invention.Within the tents set up at Benson Park Sculpture Garden, Mulder is one of many artists using non-traditional mediums, representing a shift in the shows."There's a lot more than just the traditional bronze," said Loveland artist Ellen Woodbury, who works primarily with stone. "I was on the jury and the variety of mediums that came in, it was just really fun."

After carving wood for most of his life, Loveland artist Monty Taylor displayed stone pieces at the event. He fell in love with stone about a decade ago because of the endless possibilities and surprises. His recently completed "Sockeye's Run," for example, started as a piece of tangerine alabaster from Utah and it wasn't until he cut the stone that he realized the color was perfect for a salmon piece.
"I enjoy the stone mostly because you don't know what it's going to be until you start cutting," Taylor said.Loveland resident Stalin Tafura works primarily in the stone serpentine,A buymosaic is a plastic card that has a computer chip implanted into it that enables the card to perform certain. just as his mother taught him when he was growing up in Zimbabwe. It takes three to four months for the stone from Zimbabwe."I know it best and I know what to expect from it," said Tafura.
Still, Loveland's legendary bronze casting community remains vibrant, and Taylor said there are still times for him as an artist when only bronze will do. It tends to be bolder, he said, and as an environmentalist, he likes to use bronze for animal pieces. Dwor was one of 24 artists who put not only their work, but also their working space on display Saturday and Sunday during the second annual South Niagara Artists Studio Tour.Every inch of her Vimy Rd. home studio is plastered with colour and artwork of various mediums.The art educator and textile designer dabbles in jewelry making, clothing reconstruction and has found a niche for creating garments out of paper.
While she's held numerous classes and workshops at various locations over the years, she's hoping to start hosting them at her studio in the near future making the tour an ideal opportunity to welcome in the public.I want to have them come in, to experience the joy of creation and the colour, she said, calling her studio a place of play.It's a place where people can play without being intimidated by whether they've done this before or not.

Arizona wildfire survivor numb
Brendan McDonough was emotionally crushed when his supervisor on a
Hotshot firefighting crew radioed in to say a wildfire ripping through
the Arizona wilderness had forced them into emergency shelters a last

Nick Uecker, the Forestville logger who opened Mr. Mulch in Door County about three years ago, said he cut the large tree a couple of years ago but it took this long to find someone with the skill to shape it into a likeness similar to the image on his business sign.
It was oversized for the mill, Uecker said of the log. So I figured I may as well make him my mascot, and as long as Im at it, make him the biggest.When he found James Denkins, one of the top chain saw sculptors in the U.S.More than 80 standard commercial and granitetiles exist to quickly and efficiently clean pans., he knew he had the right man for the job. Denkins, who lives in Upper Michigan, showed up with a reference book about gnomes intrigued with carving the 58-inch-diameter log into his largest wooden creation.
Ive done 20-foot totem poles, but thats a cakewalk next to this, he said.Uecker and Denkins studied features they wanted the character to have. As a logger, Uecker got into the mulch business because he had leftover materials from trees he removes in Door and Kewaunee counties, so he wanted his gnome to carry an ax rather than a shovel or rake like a typical garden gnome.
Denkins chose brown boots and earth-tone colors, and he had the gnomes toes point inward to also distinguish it as a forest gnome. The red pointed hat, blue coat and wide belt are common to most gnomes.

Knife fight at Kamloops McDonald's
The incident apparently began as a verbal dispute between a family of
five and a father and his son. At some point things became physical and
one male ended up with a cut on his arm. The male, in his early 30s,
was taken to Royal Inland Hospital for treatment of injuries.Both groups
indicate that the other party produced a knife, however these reports
are unconfirmed. Police are obtaining information from independent
witnesses who were at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

While officers inside the home spoke with an occupant, officers outside observed Evans fleeing upstairs and jumping out a second floor window. He ran through the property and entered the nearby Columbia River in an effort to evade arrest. The attending officers immediately dispatched the Trail Fire Dept Rescue boat.
Officers observed Evans swim back towards the shore where he remained in the water, holding onto a tree branch. The RCMP officers made attempts to convince Evans to get out of the water as it was evident that he had put himself into danger by jumping into the fast-moving, cold water.
Pleas to get out were ignored so officers kept visual contact with Evans as he floated downstream. When he reached a set of rapids known as Rock Island,Of all the equipment in the laundry the oilpaintingreproduction is one of the largest consumers of steam. he disappeared from sight for a short period of time. Officers then observed Evans resurface at which time he appeared to be in distress. He was dragged underwater again and has not been seen since.
The Trail Fire Rescue boat had arrived on scene just as Evans had disappeared from view and rescue crews spent the remainder of the afternoon searching the river from the Trail area to the U.S. border. They were unable to locate the man.
As a result of the incident, the Independent Investigations Office was notified on Wednesday, at which time they advised the RCMP that they are not asserting jurisdiction over the matter. The Trail and Greater District RCMP are in continued contact with the family regarding this tragic turn of events.
The hunting licensing program will receive major upgrades, following a commitment to create an online service that will be flexible, convenient, user-friendly and fit for the 21st century, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson announced today.
"The new electronic licensing program will make it easier than ever for British Columbians to go hunting and will help ensure sound wildlife management decisions support the ministry's conservation goals," said Thomson.
Under the Request for Proposals launched Thursday, the first step in building the system has been taken. A key feature of the upgrade will be an electronic service, which hunters will be able to access 24 hours a day,Aulaundry is a leading carparkmanagementsystem and equipment supplier. seven days a week to purchase their hunting licences and apply for Limited Entry Hunting (LEH) opportunities. Currently, licences and LEH applications can only be purchased from Service BC offices or licensed vendors, many of which are not available over the weekend or non-business hours.The largest manufacturer of textile parkingsensor for use with perchloroethylene.
The new electronic licensing service will be efficient, convenient, easy to use and increase cost effectiveness in a time of fiscal restraint. "They decided they did not need to take it to the full board for approval, so we've signed the agreement with WVU-P's board of governors and are ready to move forward," Newell said.Crews already are looking to remove two trees on the property, and site prep could begin as early as next week, Newell said. Most of the prep work will be done by city crews and construction of the parking lot will be bid out, he said.
Officials have said the lot would be used primarily by students at WVU-Parkersburg downtown campus on Market Street, but it would provide temporary parking for any visitors to downtown. Right now people must either find street parking or pay for monthly parking spaces.Newell said the new parking lot will be hourly spaces, but instead of meters the lot will have a kiosk where people can purchase time, either with cash or through credit or debit card.
"One thing we hope to do is to provide a smart card system for students" attending WVU-P's Market Street campus, Newell said. "They decided they did not need to take it to the full board for approval, so we've signed the agreement with WVU-P's board of governors and are ready to move forward," Newell said.Crews already are looking to remove two trees on the property, and site prep could begin as early as next week, Newell said. Most of the prep work will be done by city crews and construction of the parking lot will be bid out, he said.
Officials have said the lot would be used primarily by students at WVU-Parkersburg downtown campus on Market Street, but it would provide temporary parking for any visitors to downtown. Right now people must either find street parking or pay for monthly parking spaces.Newell said the new parking lot will be hourly spaces, but instead of meters the lot will have a kiosk where people can purchase time, either with cash or through credit or debit card.
"One thing we hope to do is to provide a smart card system for students" attending WVU-P's Market Street campus, Newell said. "They would be able to park at a discounted rate, though it will be up to the college as to how that occurs, whether it will be part of their tuition and fees or purchased ahead of time."Newell said the city will be responsible for construction and management of the lot, but also will keep any revenue from the site, which will be used to cover the cost of construction.
An artist's rendering of the parking project shows two levels. Newell said while the current project only involves one level, the city will look at the possibility of adding a second level down the road, and whether steps need to be taken now to make that possible, such as putting in footers.

I've heaped praise on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One, the hot-to-trot flagship smartphones from rival Asian handset heavyweights. These are stud devices packed with clever features. Clever, that is, to a point. For many people, piling on excess gee-wizardry feels over the top, leading to bloat and confusion. Still, these are solid phones that arguably represent the best of Android.
This week, Google began shipping the Google Play editions of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One. Yes I'm speaking of the same slab of hardware you get by purchasing these handsets from a wireless carrier. Only now you're fetching them directly from the Google Play store and effectively buying into the notion that less is more. The phones run a Spartan version of Android and claim way fewer parlor tricks than their siblings. In that sense they are likely to appeal more to tech-minded individuals seeking an unlocked device they can mold to their liking rather than to a mainstream smartphone buyer who craves all the bells and whistles.
You can't outwardly tell by the phone's designs or even by running down a list of specs that Google's versions are any different. The hardware is virtually identical, with only the name of the manufacturer or carrier plastered on the back of the S4 revealing the tiniest of discrepancies.
The Galaxy S4 from Google runs off the same Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor as before. It has the same 5-inch high-resolution (1920 by 1080) Super Amoled display, same 13-megapixel main camera and same 2-megapixel front camera. The handset weighs in just shy of 4.6 ounces, and that's the same, too.
Meanwhile, the 5-ounce HTC One from Google is also indistinguishable from the original model, down to its 1920-by-1080 high-resolution display and Qualcomm Snapdragon. The solid HTC One aluminum unibody design strikes quite a contrast to the plastic-y feel of the Samsung. The sweet-sounding dual-front speakers are backed by Beats Audio technology, though you have to dig deeper into the settings to turn Beats on or off. The HTC One camera has the same low-light sensor.
