That's meant big business for companies that cater to brides and grooms-to-be. Zaven Ghanimian, CEO of Simon G. Jewelry, which sells engagement rings and other jewelry to about 900 small stores across the country, says men in their late 50s and older have been investing more on engagement rings. A few years ago, they were spending $1,500 to $2,000; now, they're shelling out $4,000 to $8,000.
And at David's Bridal, the nation's largest bridal chain with 300 locations across the U.S., business from older couples has doubled in the past two years, compared with modest growth for the younger age group, says Brian Beitler, the chain's chief marketing officer. And while older customers represent only two to three percent of overall sales, the company expects that figure to keep growing.
And they're a lucrative bunch. David's Bridal, which is based in Consohocken, Pa., says older brides spend about $700 to $800 on gowns, including accessories like necklaces. That's higher than the $500 to $600 that customers in their twenties and early thirties typically spend.
But older brides aren't just spending more, they're spending differently. For instance, in the past, older brides tended to stick with special-occasion dresses, but now they want more traditional wedding gowns."She's our dream bride," says Catalina Maddox, fashion director at David's Bridal. "She wants everything that the 25-year-old bride wants, but more."
The trend is so prevalent that David's Bridal is looking at ways to better connect with the older wedding crowd. In fact, its store in Danbury, Conn. recently held a bridal fashion show at a nearby nursing and rehabilitation facility; the event was a hit with the residents, the store says.

"For my wedding, for my day, I want the dress I want," says Royal, who did not want to give details about the gown she settled on because she wants to surprise her future husband. Mexico is now home for Los Otros Dreamers
Everybody knows who DREAMers are, and how much they have contributed
to move the immigration debate forward with their courageous actions.
Yet there is another group of young people who also grew up undocumented
in the U.S. that almost no one in this country has heard about.They
call themselves Los Otros Dreamers, and they are a growing network of
youth who were deported or decided to return to Mexico mostly after
encountering obstacles in the U.S. to pursue their education.
Ironically, many might have been eligible for deferred action.
According to the Pew Hispanic Center, more than 1.4 million Mexicans 400,000 of them young by some estimates returned to the country of their birth from 2005 to 2010 No soy de aqu ni soy de all,After searching around the Lights section of this forum, I've come across two main suppliers for parkingsystem. says a popular Latin American song that could have been inspired by their plight. After graduating I worked as a babysitter, flower shop clerk and other random things which made me really upset and sad, Ponce said from Mexico City, where she currently lives. I thought to myself, this wasnt what my parents had in mind when they decided to leave everything behind and travel to New York City."
The lack of opportunities wasnt Ponces only frustration. An honor student, she really wanted to be a doctor but she knew that, due to her immigration status, she would not be able to practice medicine.So I studied Business Administration instead, because according to my dad it would be useful anywhere, Ponce remembers.The marbletiles is not only critical to professional photographers.
She is currently doing well as a software reseller for a company that does much of its business in California and Washington.She misses her childhood friends, and above all, her mom has no desire to come back.I came across Los Otros Dreamers last year. While in the U.S. the DREAMers struggle is about immigration reform, Los Otros Dreamers are mainly focused on moving the Mexican government to make it easier for them to go to college, find work, buy a home and become fully integrated in a society that even if theirs treats them as foreigners.This could change substantially after March 2014, when Los Otros Dreamers, a book by Mexico City-based American academic Jill Anderson and Mexican photographer Nin Sols, will be published. A collection of 22 very personal images and testimonies, it should do much to raise their visibility and make their case.
You see news stories sometimes that upset you, but you are not sure of the facts. Fox News Special Report had a quick report about Veterans having massive amounts of paperwork to complete in order to get their services. It sounded as if they were being buried with paper to get their medical services. With all the challenges of the federal government, the last thing we can tolerate would be for those brave souls who have risked their lives to protect our freedoms to be abused by bureaucrats and their red tape. We had to delve into this further.
We turned to two experienced people to clarify the status of our veterans. Scott Hogenson, the first we spoke to, was the former Deputy Asst. Secretary of Veteran Affairs. We also spoke to Tom Bowman who was the Chief of Staff for the VA from 2005 to 2008. That means he was the person making sure everything got done while the hardworking Secretary was going to all those meeting and soirees.
Both gentlemen assured us that anyone coming off a battlefield gets taken care of with no questions ask. Hogenson spoke confidently of the medical service provided wounded Vets. Though you may have read some stories about particular problems, Bowman insisted the health care the VA provides is exceptional. When asked what Fox was referring to, Hogenson suggested that a report made by the American Action Forum (AAF) may have been the source of the claims of paperwork nightmares for veterans.
We then spoke to Sam Batkins who wrote the piece, which can be viewed at the AAF website. Batkins told us they pulled the data in the report from GAO information. The report cites there are 18 agencies within the VA, and they have 613 different forms for veterans to fill out which take 43.4 million paperwork hours at a cost of $614 million a year. Batkins said AAF had done similar reports for other departments with the purpose of highlighting the paperwork maze created by the federal government. Hogenson said there may be 613 forms for the various facets of the VA, but that has little to do with the medical benefits. Bowman stated they had tried to cut down the amount of forms and the paperwork maze, but stated he was not satisfied with the progress.
Bowman spoke of the fact the VA had tried to implement a new disability claims computer system (Veterans Benefits Management System) which still has not gotten to the point where Bowman believes it is properly serving the Vets. He spoke of ongoing challenges of implementation and utilization in different VA benefit offices throughout the country. Interesting the federal government constantly is coming down on the big banks. But if you open an account at Chase or Bank of America in San Diego you can access the account information in Peoria the next day. That the government cant properly update their computers continues to fascinate.
The real issue that all are focused on (including the AAF) is the backlog of disability claims at the VA. There had been a backlog of up to 900,000 claims that have been made for Vets that have not been finalized. These claims typically determine a partial disability that grants the vet a monthly payout. The current backlog is 773,000 unprocessed claims of which 523,000 are over 125 days old. The over 125 day amount is down due to overtime granted to VA employees to administer the claims. President Obama announced in a recent speech that the VA, American Bar Association and Legal Services Corp. agreed on a program that would help unrepresented Vets with their unresolved claims.
Bowman explained the complexity of the problem, which will not be resolved by throwing attorneys at it. Many of the claims assert multiple disabilities. The problem is that the VA has to determine which of those claims are from the Vets time in uniform and which may have happened outside of service years. That means each claim has to have a proper review by trained medical personnel. Bowman stated he believes Wherever the VA can rule in favor of the Veteran it does, though some believe that not to be true. We turned to two experienced people to clarify the status of our veterans. Scott Hogenson, the first we spoke to, was the former Deputy Asst. Secretary of Veteran Affairs. We also spoke to Tom Bowman who was the Chief of Staff for the VA from 2005 to 2008. That means he was the person making sure everything got done while the hardworking Secretary was going to all those meeting and soirees.
Both gentlemen assured us that anyone coming off a battlefield gets taken care of with no questions ask. Hogenson spoke confidently of the medical service provided wounded Vets. Though you may have read some stories about particular problems, Bowman insisted the health care the VA provides is exceptional. When asked what Fox was referring to, Hogenson suggested that a report made by the American Action Forum (AAF) may have been the source of the claims of paperwork nightmares for veterans.
We then spoke to Sam Batkins who wrote the piece, which can be viewed at the AAF website. Batkins told us they pulled the data in the report from GAO information. The report cites there are 18 agencies within the VA, and they have 613 different forms for veterans to fill out which take 43.4 million paperwork hours at a cost of $614 million a year. Batkins said AAF had done similar reports for other departments with the purpose of highlighting the paperwork maze created by the federal government. Hogenson said there may be 613 forms for the various facets of the VA, but that has little to do with the medical benefits. Bowman stated they had tried to cut down the amount of forms and the paperwork maze, but stated he was not satisfied with the progress.
Bowman spoke of the fact the VA had tried to implement a new disability claims computer system (Veterans Benefits Management System) which still has not gotten to the point where Bowman believes it is properly serving the Vets. He spoke of ongoing challenges of implementation and utilization in different VA benefit offices throughout the country. Interesting the federal government constantly is coming down on the big banks. The real issue that all are focused on (including the AAF) is the backlog of disability claims at the VA. There had been a backlog of up to 900,000 claims that have been made for Vets that have not been finalized. These claims typically determine a partial disability that grants the vet a monthly payout. The current backlog is 773,000 unprocessed claims of which 523,000 are over 125 days old. The over 125 day amount is down due to overtime granted to VA employees to administer the claims. President Obama announced in a recent speech that the VA, American Bar Association and Legal Services Corp. agreed on a program that would help unrepresented Vets with their unresolved claims.
Bowman explained the complexity of the problem, which will not be resolved by throwing attorneys at it. Many of the claims assert multiple disabilities. The problem is that the VA has to determine which of those claims are from the Vets time in uniform and which may have happened outside of service years. That means each claim has to have a proper review by trained medical personnel. Bowman stated he believes Wherever the VA can rule in favor of the Veteran it does, though some believe that not to be true. For Some Kids, Summer Camp Includes
The idea of taking a child to prison for a week may bring to mind
visions of “Scared Straight” programs. But the Father to Child Summer
Camp Behind Bars does just that — and the goal is to let kids bond with
their fathers, who might be incarcerated far from their families.The
unique summer camp lodges children at a campground near prisons in
Maryland and North Carolina, according to Here & Now, the show from
WBUR and NPR. The kids visit their fathers in prison each day.
And the camp has a fan in a boy named Kobe, who tells Here & Now co-host Robin Young that his father invited him to attend during a phone call from prison.“I was actually a little nervous,” Kobe tells Robin. “Not really much about the prison. I was really more nervous about seeing him, than the prison itself. Because I hadn’t seen him in a few years.”
As the Hope House website explains, the children don’t spend the night in prison — they stay at a nearby campground, complete with s’mores. But they’re with their fathers for several hours each day, doing crafts and other activities.The program also has requirements for which prisoners can take part, based on their behavior and the offenses for which they’re being punished. Each camp session includes about 15 children.
Asked about his experience, Kobe says he’s happy he went.“It was great. We hit it off from the start,” he tells Robin. “We talked about family and our interests, and things like that. It changed my whole perspective about prison. And over that week, I changed my perspective of him — which was never bad in the first place; I didn’t hate him or resent him or anything.”
Kobe says that he and his dad used the time together to rebuild their relationship. And he realized they have similar personalities and senses of humor.“It was a great experience,” he says. “We had like, no prior connection before the camp. This camp brought us together.”

These days, as well as making one-off commissioned pieces or preparing for exhibitions or markets, Suzie loves nothing more than to pass-on her craft through workshops, which, incidentally, also include jewellery making.“My work has a whimsical charm and it always gives me pleasure when I raise a smile from an amused onlooker,” she says, confirming that American visitors are particularly taken by the more ‘fanciful’ creations.
Suzie has also expanded her craft to making jewellery and small sculptural pieces, which involves working with a propane and oxygen flame, and an annealing kiln and molten glass. banning same-sex marriage, some 50 patrons at the Dolphin Bar in Redondo
Beach happened to be at the right place at the right time.
Steve Bopp, a 65-year-old Redondo Beach native, and his 36-year-old boyfriend Gilbert Gonzalez quietly faced each other on the dim corner stage with Omar Rivas, a longtime Dolphin bartender, presiding over them. Minutes ago, the couple had approached Rivas about signing their marriage certificate. They had decided the ceremony would come at a later date.
But Rivas, 36, who was ordained some 10 years ago and recently began officiating ceremonies for couples who cant otherwise afford it, suggested they tie the knot in front of everyone right then inside the Dolphin Bar. They turned off the jukebox, and the bars attention shifted to the two men on the stage.
The Dolphin Bar is the only openly gay bar in the South Bay, a region of 105 square miles encompassing 19 cities with a population of nearly 900,000. It was once one of four gay establishments in the area, with dance club J.R. Briens just down the street.
The Dolphin, a small neighborhood dive bar on Artesia Boulevard, is easy to miss C especially without its signature rainbow flag hanging outside. It was torn down a few months ago. It was drunk people trying to do photo opps, nothing malicious, says Brandon Gresham, the Dolphins weekday bartender.

Man charged in death of Golden Hill woman
A man accused of killing an elderly woman in her Golden Hill home last month after taking her jewelry and other valuables pleaded not guilty Thursday in what could become a death penalty case.
Jeff Boswell, 43, was arrested Aug. 2 in connection with the death of Blanche Griffin, 87. The defendant, also identified in court by the name Tom Reed, is charged with murder and a special-circumstance allegation of murder during a robbery.Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek Boswells execution or life in prison without parole if he is convicted in trial. That decision is usually made after a preliminary hearing has been held.
Deputy District Attorney Dan Link said in court Thursday that Griffin was found July 10 in her residence on F Street near 29th Street, when her son-in-law when to check on her. Her daughter noticed that rings had been taken off Griffins fingers, and that other items were missing from the home, including jewelry and a computer.
An autopsy revealed later that Griffin had died of blunt force trauma, and there were signs she had been strangled.Boswells DNA was found in swabs taken from Griffins neck area and underneath her fingernails, Link said.The defendant, who has been described as an acquaintance of Griffins, was found 15 hours after the body was found. He was hiding in a shower at his girlfriends nearby home.

Kill me, the prosecutor said.Link said the District Attorneys Office waited to arraign Boswell until they had confirmation on the DNA evidence. Diana Gaikazova is known around town for her handcrafted dainty heart
pendants. But, the Italian-born artist has recently designed a new
daringalmost tribalnecklace line with a European twist that is on
display at her Heart of the Square gallery.I wanted to be more bold,
Gaikazova said on Thursday, Aug. 1, in her Dedham Square studio. Hearts
are very dainty, small scale, and its interesting for me to try
something larger scale for maybe a different kind of womana statement
necklace, something perhaps tribal and eclectic, ethnic.
Gaikazova designed the new collection after visiting Moscow, where she grew up, in May.It was growing in me and I knew I wanted to try something different, combining what I saw with what I like, she said waving her hands, which were covered in shades of red, green and pink paint. The same precious stones with rough shapes and large contours around the neck.
The collection features bold hand-dyed Greek cotton woven necklaces with strips of linen and bamboo threads accompanied with Celtic weave, natural Keshi pearls, bronze elements and precious stones.Im being edgy and thoughtful at the same time and mindful of the risks that Im taking in colors and shapes, she said. I like deep colors and its part of my culture for being Russian and Armenian.

Buzz of excitement about a 'remarkable' development
HAD heard about Charles Tryon Court before from people in the estate
agency industry who are fizzing with excitement about its quality, so I
was quite keen to go along when I got the call asking me to view it.
It is a quite extraordinary place and I cannot think of anything else quite like it in this area. Public school fees add up
Buying tissue and copy paper for your kids classroom C or subjecting
co-workers and family members to endless fundraisers C have become
standard. But some public school districts have upped the ante, charging
students mandatory fees and holding out the threat of collections or
barring students from participating in activities if their parents dont
pay up.
The ACLU says its illegal. Schools counter that theyre facing huge budget shortfalls and that charging fees is better than firing teachers. Education experts warn that fees create a dynamic of inequality. Meanwhile, families are caught in the middle as they dig deeper into their pocketbooks and bank accounts.
This stuff is hard for families with two parents at home; I am a single mom, Maggie Little, a parent from Rockwall, Texas, said by email. Her high school daughters Advanced Placement classes last year cost between $150 and $200 for the first semester alone, she said. In addition, shes paying around $400 a year so her daughter can participate in marching band.

Theyre pretty effective because they dont let the kids participate or they embarrass them, Rosenbaum said. The act of making a kid request a waiver makes that kid stick out and puts enormous pressure on that kid.

Khirsara has everything to be called a mature Harappan site: systematic town planning, a citadel complex where the ruling elite lived, a factory complex, habitation annexes, a warehouse, drainage system, and massive fortification walls. All the structures were built of sandstone blocks set in mud mortar. More than 4,200 years ago, Khirsara was an important trading outpost in western Kutch in Gujarat on the way to Sind in present-day Pakistan. Its factory manufactured enormous quantities of beads from cornelian, agate, jasper, lapis lazuli, steatite and chalcedony; bangles and inlays from conch shells; copper artefacts such as bangles, rings, beads, knives, needles, fish-hooks, arrowheads and weights; and terracotta rattles, toy-carts and gamesmen. One trench alone threw up 25,000 exquisite beads made of steatite.
Trench after trench laid in Khirsaras factory have yielded a bonanza of Harappan ceramics painted pottery, the reserve slip ware used by the elite in society, sturdy storage jars, globular pots, perforated jars, basins, dishes, bowls, beakers, dish-on-stand and incense burners. The painted pottery with occasional animal motifs,A cleaningservic resembles a credit card in size and shape. have geometric designs of broad bands, crosses, spirals, loops, arches and zigzags. The profusion of miniature pots that the site has revealed is puzzling.
R.N. Kumaran, Assistant Archaeologist, ASI, said: We have found furnaces and a tandoor. There is evidence of copper-working and ash. We have found huge quantities of steatite beads and some seals made of steatite. From all this, we have identified it as a factory site.
An extraordinary feature about Khirsaras Harappan settlement is that it not only had an outer fortification wall around it but every complex inside had its own fortification wall, be it the citadel, the warehouse, and the factory with its habitation annexe. The fortification walls for the warehouse and the factory had guard rooms and salients for mounting watch.
Even the potters kiln, which lay outside the outer fortification walls, had its own fortification wall. The outer fortification wall, 310 metres by 230 metres and more than 4,400 years old, still stands in several places.You will see earcap , competitive price and first-class service.
This is the first time in the Harappan context that we have found separation fortification walls for each complex on the site, and their purpose is to ensure the safety of its residents and the goods manufactured, said Mr. Jitendra Nath, now Superintending Archaeologist, Mumbai Circle, ASI.
A massive warehouse, measuring 28 metres by 12 metres, excavated had 14 parallel walls, with an average length of 10.8 metres and 1.55 metres breadth. Its superstructure was made of wood and daub. The space between the parallel walls enabled circulation of fresh air to protect the stored goods. Mr. Jitendra Nath said: It must have been multipurpose warehouse for storing goods for export or those that have been imported. Its proximity with river Khari is to support the maritime trading activities of the Khirsarans. A warehouse is a rare type of structure found in a few Harappan sites. It indicates a state of surplus economy.
The houses in the citadel, where the elite lived, had verandas, interconnected rooms, floors paved with multicoloured bricks and a rock-cut well. A five-metre paved lane separated the citadel from the factory. The citadel was deliberately built adjacent to the warehouse so that the rulers could keep a watch on the manufacturing and trading activities, said Mr. Kumaran.
