JTV's Jewel School Designer Showcase Opens for Entries

Jewelry Television (JTV) is offering $10,000 in cash and prizes for this year's annual Jewel School Designer Showcase contest. The company defined three jewelry-making categories to enter one-of-a-kind jewelry designs between now and August 21.

Life inside the world's second largest refugee camp

The camp has come a long way in a year. Initially living in tents, refugees are now increasingly housed in caravans. Winter at Zaatari was especially hard for those in tents, although ironically during the hot summer months many refugees now choose to spend time in these, which are cooler, than the metal caravans where the heat can be intense. 

The Jordanian government estimates that 554,000 Syrian refugees have arrived in Jordan since March 2011. One hundred and fifty thousand of that number live at Zaatari, making the refugee camp Jordan's fourth largest city. 

Zaatari is now a sprawl of destitute urban life. Shops throng its main thoroughfare, selling everything from toothpaste to wedding dresses. Children- although by no means all- attend school in the camp, and there is also a Zaatari mosque. Some refugees even have satellite television! 

However there is no escaping the fact this is still a refugee camp. Zaatari is filled with NGOs and aid agencies which provide people with food ration cards and other essential items: not everyone can afford to buy food from shops, and when bread is handed out to thousands of people every morning, tensions run high. Lastly, Syrians who have escaped a homeland ripped apart by conflict are traumatized by the violence they have experienced, mourning the people they have lost.

I thought, 'smiling wins', so I stuck this smile on. Everybody was there in their couture, and I'm wearing this thing, like a sandwich board C it was bad. And then trying to be cool C there's this wonderful French saying, 'It's all in the bearing' C so even if you're caught naked, it's how you hold yourself. I remembered this, so I took a glass of champagne," she suspends a delicate hand in the air, as if carrying a china teacup C "but the glass of champagne was going like this" C a wild shaking motion C so I had to grab my wrist to carry on this composure." In the end she was the last to leave, "because I wanted to knobble her [Thatcher] about acid rain".

For quite a while, in the 80s and early 90s, Hamnett could do no wrong. She claims she invented boiler suits, stone-washed denim, stretch denim, garment washing; "power-dressing" was the title of one of her shows before it entered the lexicon. At one point in the early 90s she had 700 stores worldwide and a turnover of 30-40m. Even when she put elastic bands around her wrist "because they're dead useful" it was taken as a fashion statement. "I mean, get real!" She threw incredible parties C one, on two boats on the Seine, where the entertainment was a young Lily Savage, "people talked about this party for 15 years. It was fabulous fun." Do you miss all that? "I miss that,A ridiculously low price on this All-Purpose flatworironer by Gordon. hell yeah." Eventually, though, she found the attention "very strange and alienating. I felt very much alone."

After she left Central St Martin's she was married and divorced, then had two children in a second relationship, which also broke up. She is drily direct about the challenge of being so much more successful than her partners. "They hate it." Any examples? "I wouldn't tell them to you if I had. But it is difficult for strong women. I think because men C it's like biological programming C they don't like to be challenged. I mean I adore men, I'm not that kind of feminist. I think we're equal but different, but working with men, employing men C it's very, very hard."

Her parents paid for boarding school C Cheltenham Ladies' College C but made a point of refusing to support her after that. "I was deeply hurt, but OK, you take it on board. And I'm hugely grateful, because I think they did the right thing." She is proud to have always been financially independent, in fact, "I over-achieved on it slightly. And that was absolutely great." Taking her cue, partly, from a father who had signed the Official Secrets Act and so couldn't talk about work, she banned even talking about her job, let alone working at it, after 5.30pm when her sons were small, and 7.30pm to this day; she did not work during holidays. The Official Secrets Act had darker ramifications for her family, however, "because you can't confide," she says. Her parents separated and her father committed suicide when she was 28.

Then, in 1989, she discovered how cotton was produced C the terrible cost, to humans and the environment, of blanket use of pesticides C and decided things had to change.Choose the right cableties in an array of colors. Suddenly she was going to trade fairs to "meet people I'd been buying 100,000 metres off, and saying, 'Have you got any organic cotton?', and they'd say, 'Why should we produce it since you're the only one asking for it?'" She stills sell T-shirts, particularly through the Co-op chain in Italy. In 2006-7 she started a sustainable clothing line for Tesco, but that ended prematurely when a complaint she made about the marketing, to a reporter from Draper's Record became, as she puts it, "Hamnett leaves Tesco in fair trade fiasco".

DDA Ramps Up PR After First Council Vote

The proposed amendments to Chapter 7 of the city code, given initial approval at the councils April 1, 2013 meeting, would reduce the DDAs TIF capture by roughly $931,000 for FY 2014 C compared to the amount the DDA would receive based on the DDAs current interpretation of the ordinance. But in adopting its two-year budget recently, DDA did not factor in recent building projects in the downtown C which add to the increment on which the DDA can capture taxes, starting in FY 2014.

The idea of any kind of cap C let alone one thats based on estimates contained in the appendix of the DDAs TIF plan C was sharply criticized by Joan Lowenstein, who characterized the approach as based on a fallacy. She also called the idea of a cap poor public policy. However, both the cap and its basis are already in the existing ordinance language that the city councils ordinance amendment seeks to clarify.

Roger Hewitt took the boards meeting as an opportunity to question whether the ordinance amendments actually clarify how the calculations are to be done, contending that hed come up with different results than the city treasurer, starting from the same ordinance language. Russ Collins contrasted the amount of net revenue received by the city from the geographic area of the DDA district before the DDA was established back in 1982, compared to today. The net proceeds from taxes and the public parking system (which lost about $250,000 a year during that era) came to about $1.25 million 30 years ago, according to Collins. Today, the city receives nearly $8 million annually C around $4 million in taxes, $3 million in parking revenue, and a grant to the city of roughly $0.5 million a year toward debt on the citys new Justice Center building.

Bob Guenzel focused his remarks less on the financial side and more on the aspects of the ordinance change that would restrict future board membership. He saw no benefit to the proposed DDA term limits, noting that the city council has an opportunity to end a DDA board members service by deciding not to re-appoint someone to the board. John Mouat was critical of the proposed ordinance changes that would prevent elected officials of taxing jurisdictions from serving on the board, saying hed found the participation of politically-connected people to be beneficial to the board.

The extended remarks by board members on the topic came in the context of a 7-3 vote by the city council on April 1, giving initial approval of the ordinance changes. Another amendment stipulates that if tax increment financing is used as the financing method for an approved authority project, the project must meet one of the DDAs adopted plan goals. Among those plan goals is support of housing. The amendment provides the ability of the DDA to make investments in properties not strictly in the district, but also in neighborhoods near the district.

New York enacts gun-control law, first since Newtown attack

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed into law one of the nation’s toughest gun-control measures and the first to be enacted since the mass shooting last month at an elementary school in neighboring Connecticut.

The bill passed the Democratic-led Assembly on Tuesday afternoon, a day after sweeping through the Republican-majority Senate.

The bill expands the state’s ban on assault weapons, puts limits on ammunition capacity and has new measures to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

Cuomo pressed for passage of the bill after a gunman killed 20 students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, just over one month ago.

Theater motivates teen in need of transplant

Seventeen-year-old Haley Wilson has not let the need for a kidney transplant slow her down.

"I'm still just like a normal teenager," she said.

Though Wilson has missed much of her junior year at New Albany High School and Metro High School because her illness makes her tired, she still plans to attend college to study theater and perhaps another major. She currently attends New Albany High School in the mornings and Metro High School's Mosaic program at First Congregational Church in Columbus in the afternoons.

Wilson has been part of the New Albany High School drama department since she was a freshman. She said she started directing productions last year.

She is scheduled to co-direct William Shakespeare's As You Like It in the spring and the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors this summer, even though she soon is expected to start kidney dialysis for four hours a day three times a week.

Dialysis diffuses waste from and filters water from blood in the body, a normal function of the kidney, according to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Dialysis is considered a temporary solution, especially in Wilson's case. She suffers from a genetic affliction called polycystic kidney disease.

Wilson said she has a large number of cysts on her kidneys, which is how doctors initially determined she had the disease.

While on vacation the week before school began in August, Wilson said, she felt ill. After a few visits to the doctor, she was diagnosed with PKD.

She said she was not surprised because her mother, aunt and older sister also suffer from the disease.

"It's particularly aggressive in my case, and doctors told me it is the worst case they've seen in anyone my age," Wilson said. "Sixty to 65 percent of the population has type O blood, which means there is a good chance to find someone to donate," Henry said. "A lot of people do it based on the fact that it's the right thing to do and they know how someone would benefit."

While Haley Wilson recognizes she has many challenges ahead, she is staying positive as she waits for a solution.

"I feel like I am growing from this experience and becoming a stronger person," she said. "If I can get through this so early in my life, maybe it will be easier in the future."

She said that future almost certainly will include directing, and the drama department at New Albany High School helps her move one step closer to it, one day at a time.

"Directing is like my greatest passion," she said. "It's everything I love combined: working with people, visual art, telling a story ... music, so many different things ...

What's Happening In IBM i App Dev?

Green screens scare the daylights (actually not my first choice of words) out of me. Like great white sharks and vampire bats, they have their place in the world. But I don't want to go to that place. Most people would probably agree with me about the sharks and the bats. There are many RPG and COBOL programmers, however, who are perfectly comfortable in a green-screen world. What in the name of modern application development are they thinking?

There is a reason people use the term computer science rather than computer history. IT is an ongoing endeavor. You have probably heard that time stands still for no one. It's not even debatable. Ask Bob Cozzi, the Jack Sparrow of the RPG seas. He will tell you green screens are the number one cause of lost market share for the later day IBM midrange computing platform.

The number of green-screen applications that still exist is amazing. You can readily find them in all types of businesses. And if you are looking for them, you can find plenty of end users who aren't happy to be staring at one of those monolithic code-opatumuses. One of the sessions was called What's happening in the world of Application Development on IBM i. Tim Rowe, the IBM i business architect for application development, was the speaker. Even when developers are not substantially changing any code, Rowe says that just switching from green-screen development tools to modern tooling gets them moving in the right direction. (You have to use a graphical interface to appreciate one, presumably.) That is a first step in changing the equation by upgrading skills using modern development tools that that will eventually be used to develop new code and maintain existing code.

"Modern tooling leads to modern coding techniques and allows developers to reach beyond RPG- or COBOL-centric programming," Rowe says. "You can't move to a modern user interface using the old tooling. So tooling is a first step. But it's not just about the tooling. That's one aspect. It also includes end user experiences. It's about how you display your content to your customers. Does the green screen still make the best display for the end users or do you need to think about moving to Web or mobile."

Rowe is a proponent of giving companies options. He appreciates that IBM i shops can accomplish application modernization by taking many paths, which include IBM's preferred methods as well as those of the third-party vendors.

"I am IBM i-centric and Rational is a portion of that," he says, "but I am focused on what's going on from the perspective of the operating system. The goal is the successful development and running of applications. One thing we don't do is tell the customer what to do. Every customer has a different situation, but much of decision making comes down to skills, abilities, resources, money, and time. All those factors can have an influence on the direction companies take."

Some people might argue that RPG is a dying language, but Rowe isn't one of them. He will swear that RPG is here to stay, refers to it as a modern business language, and points to interoperability with other languages like XML and SQL. His enthusiasm, however, does not include the belief that all things should be done in RPG.

"There's no single language for everything. Even the Java programmers are understanding that you don’t use Java for everything," Rowe says. "I tell IBM i shops to keep portions of the applications in the languages where it makes the most sense. PHP may be right to do certain things with the UI, maybe Java, maybe something else. You are not going to do Web UI development in RPG and you are not going to do record-level access from PHP."

PHP in the IBM i ecosystem has been successful from Rowe's point of view. It continues to gain momentum, especially with companies that have lately made their move into application modernization. There are also PHP options being offered by some of the third-party application development companies, which indicates those ISVs see PHP momentum happening.

"I think the advent of PHP has had a far greater impact in many ways than anything else, even Java, has done," RPG and IBM i advocate, author, instructor, and innovator Jon Paris told IT Jungle in July 2012. "There is an incredible amount of good, free information out there--not to mention the books, online classes,We can supply howo truck products as below. and so on. That is a rather different story than for the free RPG offerings in the same arena. It is also possible to hire young experienced programmers and to get help mentoring existing staff to bring them up to speed."

But the point is not to talk about what could have or should have been. The point is to make decisions on where to go from here.

As Rowe says, "You can stand and argue until you are blue in the face about which path is better, and I wouldn't disagree with any of the arguments. But customers are bumping into the reality that they can't continue to live on their 5250 and the modern UI is being called for. They are being forced to change."

Can this man save pinball?

The last guys who tried to save pinball bet all their quarters on a bunch of 3-D aliens. With sales of new machines dwindling in the late 1990s, the top execs at Williams, the company that controlled 80 percent of the worldwide market, called on their designers to reinvent the game. They emerged with an arcade centaur — the head of a video game on the body of a pinball machine — in which pixilated, holographic-looking Martians marauded among the mechanical gewgaws. Pinball 2000 was a technological marvel. It also nearly killed pinball forever.

In October 1999, not long after Williams introduced Pinball 2000 in a promotional video featuring clips of the moon landing and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, the company shuttered its pinball division. As the excellent documentary "Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball" explains, Revenge From Mars, the initial Pinball 2000 title, sold well, but a Star Wars Episode I-themed follow-up got less traction with the Jar Jar-hating masses. Rather than prop up its declining pinball operation, Williams chose to focus on a more promising line of business: slot machines.

Perhaps it's true that irrational exuberance can lead you to bankruptcy. But it's also the only way to make something great from absolutely nothing, just as Guarnieri's role models did. "What overcomes doubt,All our plastic moulds are vacuum formed using food safe plastic." he says, "is the resolve and the passion and determination of people like Steve Jobs and Sam Walton, whether it's going over the hill in Normandy or whether it's building a freaking pinball machine."

Pinball first captivated the spare-change-having masses during the otherwise unamusing Great Depression, then surged again after World War II with the game-changing advent of the flipper. During that same period, video games went from collecting around $1 billion per year in quarters to a high of $8 billion, with 1980's Pac-Man reportedly earning more than $1 billion in coins in its first year on the street.

As silver balls lost their capacity to thrill in the 1980s, Guarnieri rode the video game wave. At his peak as an arcade operator and service person, he oversaw 400 video games in and around New York City, in pizzerias and hardware stores and barber shops, as well as the Waldorf-Astoria and the World Trade Center's Skydive Restaurant. For a time, Guarnieri says, the joystick tycoon's biggest concern was excessive profitability — once in a while, a massively popular game like Asteroids would jam up with quarters, rendering it inoperable.

But around 1986, the arcade bubble burst. And though pinball had a brief resurgence a few years later — 1992's "The Addams Family," the game I played obsessively in my college rec center, sold more than 20,000 units, making it the most-popular machine since the 1930s — that market collapsed again in the mid-1990s, leading the majority of manufacturers to abandon the business for good.

Pinball succumbed to the same forces that killed the video arcade. In the 1970s, arcade games far outclassed the entertainment competition, which consisted primarily of three channels of lousy network television, staring contests and throwing rocks at cars. But with the spread of home consoles and cable TV (and eventually ubiquitous Web access and smartphones), paying to play video games at some retail establishment felt inconvenient and outdated, like carrying a boombox on your shoulder or using an outhouse.
