The seventh annual, three-day fundraiser for the Church Health Center, providing health care for the working uninsured, will kick off that Thursday evening with a VIP barbecue at Ardent Studios.

“While it’s a VIP barbecue for donors, bands, sponsors and friends of the center, there is a public ticket component so folks from the community can purchase a ticket, or a table for that matter,” said Jeff Hulett, public relations and communications coordinator for the Church Health Center.

The following night sees a bill of four bands at Young Avenue Deli in Cooper-Young, featuring the Side Street Steppers, Reemus Bodeemus, Hope Clayburn’s Soul Scrimmage and Kaleidophonix, as well as DJ Devin Steel between sets. Playing off the name of a fundraiser already in place, Concert of Love, which featured the music of church choirs, Stockwell, a hard-playing guitarist and singer himself, coined Rock for Love. The three leveraged their years as working musicians to put together a lineup.

Since the first year, when funds raised totaled about $7,500, the total has climbed each year, with last year seeing $50,000. “Why has it grown? Because Memphis is generous,” he said. “Our music community and our creative community are generous, and they want to give back, and they see that the Church Health Center is an organization that’s helped them.”

Metrolinx bureaucrats score premium tickets

Bureaucrats at a provincial agency asking for billions to expand transit in the GTA had exclusive access to premium tickets to the Toronto International Film Festival and a Buffalo Bills game, the Toronto Sun has learned.The sponsorship deals came to light because Metrolinx had trouble managing two agreements in 2011 that yielded premium tickets to the prestigious events.

The festival gave Metrolinx promotional placement in a number of its programs, banners and advertisements. Metrolinx did the same for TIFF.Film festival officials also gave Metrolinx 24 tickets to gala screenings, 32 tickets to non-gala screenings, four invitations to the opening night gala film and party, two invitations to the closing night gala party, two invitations to the pre-opening cocktail reception and six more invitations to three exclusive events. Two complimentary festival programs and film schedules were also included in the deal.

No monetary value was estimated for the tickets and merchandise provided to Metrolinx.When contacted by the Toronto Sun, TIFF officials refused to disclose the value of the tickets and merchandise provided to Metrolinx, citing confidentiality rules.

In a note to the Sun, provided in advance of the document disclosure, Metrolinx officials acknowledged they don't know who used the TIFF tickets or for what purpose, but then go on to say tickets were used in promotions for GO customers, some were given to undisclosed charities and that some GO staff attended "certain TIFF events."

A 7-month-old Florida boy has died after swallowing a candy-colored liquid laundry packet, raising concerns about the access that young children have to the increasingly popular products.

Man charged in death of Golden Hill woman

A man accused of killing an elderly woman in her Golden Hill home last month after taking her jewelry and other valuables pleaded not guilty Thursday in what could become a death penalty case. 

Jeff Boswell, 43, was arrested Aug. 2 in connection with the death of Blanche Griffin, 87. The defendant, also identified in court by the name Tom Reed, is charged with murder and a special-circumstance allegation of murder during a robbery.Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek Boswells execution or life in prison without parole if he is convicted in trial. That decision is usually made after a preliminary hearing has been held. 

Deputy District Attorney Dan Link said in court Thursday that Griffin was found July 10 in her residence on F Street near 29th Street, when her son-in-law when to check on her. Her daughter noticed that rings had been taken off Griffins fingers, and that other items were missing from the home, including jewelry and a computer. 

An autopsy revealed later that Griffin had died of blunt force trauma, and there were signs she had been strangled.Boswells DNA was found in swabs taken from Griffins neck area and underneath her fingernails, Link said.The defendant, who has been described as an acquaintance of Griffins, was found 15 hours after the body was found. He was hiding in a shower at his girlfriends nearby home. 

When San Diego police approached him, Boswell told them, Shoot me. Kill me, the prosecutor said.Link said the District Attorneys Office waited to arraign Boswell until they had confirmation on the DNA evidence. He said the defendant has a lengthy criminal history, including a residential burglary conviction from 1995 in San Diego County that is listed on the complaint.

Courthouse monument to close part of Augusta's State

Police are urging drivers to avoid State Street today, as a section of the road will be shut down while workers install a new monument on the lawn in front of the Kennebec County Courthouse.

Augusta police Lt. Kevin Lully said State Street will be closed from Winthrop Street to Weston Street. The closure is expected to begin at 8 a.m. and last for about four hours. No traffic or parking will be allowed on the closed section, Lully said.

The monument is a life-size bronze statue of Melville Weston Fuller, who was born in Augusta and became the eighth chief justice of the United States. A foundation is already in place, Kennebec County Administrator Robert Devlin said. Light cabinets are definitely making a comeback after the invasion of dark cabinets flooded the market over that past seven years. I love the look of natural maple with black so I would be tempted to have them striped and re-stained the same color. However, it is definitely a tremendous amount of work to stripe and re-stain cabinets when they are beginning to yellow. Furthermore, with the oak hardwood flooring running throughout the kitchen it would be nice to have some contrast against the cabinetry. I also think you will appreciate the warmth and organic characteristics of the oak flooring when you have something contrasting against it.

If the cabinets have a nice simple profile such as a shaker style (recessed panel), I would suggest that a simpler solution would be to sand, primer and paint the cabinets for a fresh and new look to the space. A soft white cabinet is all the rage right now, but it is also a timeless choice. Although white cabinets fluctuate in popularity they never really go out of style. Preserving That Great Performance

Artists, editors and the occasional MTV producer are making pilgrimages to its fifth-floor gallery, where the museums XFR STN project helps them preserve, and in some cases, excavate, artworks stored on floppy disks, videocassettes and other obsolete media.Its like Noahs ark, said Ben Fino-Radin, a digital conservator for the project. Some of this stuff hasnt been seen in 30 years.

It can be something of a random archaeological dig, dependent on what is brought in by the artists seeking free one-on-one time with technicians to digitize their work. Most of it is then uploaded to archive.org, the Internets Wayback Machine, where it is available for anybody to experience.

The project, pronounced transfer station, runs through Sept. 8 and allows anyone to bring in their work after signing up on the museums Web site. Its also open to museumgoers, who can see an exhibition of retro videos, posters and machinery, and witness the artists and technicians midrestoration. Along the way theres a healthy dose of nostalgia, as well as the smack of recognition that time, or at least technology, travels rather fast.

In the space of a few hours you go from U-matic, an analog tape deck from the 1970s, to watching it on your phone, Mr. Fino-Radin said.A recent tour revealed how art buried in the audiovisual graveyard lives again.

At a tower of outdated machines a U-matic, an oscilloscope Walter Forsberg, an audiovisual conservator for the project, worked with the artist Matthew Geller to digitize a tape of the artists Kiki Smith, Rebecca Allen and Ellen Cooper fronting the Cardboard Air Band in a performance at the Kitchen. Mr. Geller guessed that it was from 1981, when the artists were at the beginning of their careers. Even so, the footage, of men and women in skinny pants and floppy bangs singing and playing cardboard instruments, looked remarkably contemporary.

Its certainly interesting seeing a lot of this stuff, with the knowledge now of what comes after it, said Mr. Geller, a site-specific installation artist. We were all in our 20s, and no one ever imagined being famous until our 30s or 40s.Museum visitors watched footage from the Monday/Wednesday/Friday Video Club, an art collective begun in the 1980s, led by the artists and writers Alan W. Moore and Michael Carter. The club was spun out of Colab, Collaborative Projects Inc., a downtown group that also helped start ABC No Rio, a cultural space still kicking on the Lower East Side.

Andrea Callard, a Colab artist, has helped digitize hours of tapes from the MWF club that span a 10-year period. In 2004 New York University acquired her papers, including the first videos she made in the 1970s and 80s. I was at a point in my life when I really wanted to see what that stuff looked like, she said, taking a break from her headphones and monitor. If you want to experience the continuity of your work, thats important. Its really fun to see it. Now they have a new audience. Its like a second life.

MTV Raps in the early 1990s, brought in a tape of performances by Public Enemy, Run DMC with the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan the foundations of contemporary hip-hop.

In an era overstimulated by images, there will be a need, Mr. Tolliver said, to look back, at certain points, at our cultural timeline to try to find moments to connect with, to revisit or be inspired by.Mr. Tolliver also digitized rap ephemera, like a 1992 Harlem boxing match. Willie D of the Geto Boys knocked out Melle Mel of the Sugar Hill Gang, he recalled. That was one of the first times I ever picked up a camera. It was wild looking back at that.

The obsolescence of tools that were once cutting edge highlights the limits of the digital anthology the New Museum is creating; its collection is just a small fraction of whats out there, Ms. Burton said, and its rather arbitrary.

It quickly became apparent that the man hired to carve the horseback likenesses of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson into Stone Mountain wasnt up to the task. Like those who tried in the 1910s and 20s including the sculptor who went on to create Mount Rushmore Walker Kirkland Hancock just couldnt picture such gigantic carvings so close up.

Once 400 feet up on the mountain, there was no stepping back for perspective. The figures were crude. The work was frustrating.

Faulkner wasnt any kind of artist, but he had an eye for it. More than once he had directed Weiblens attention toward a misdirected lapel on General Lees uniform. He had a scientific approach and knew working from a scale model (a foot on the mountain for every inch on the model) would be the best way to tackle such a massive task.

Missouri hospitals join consolidation

Community Health Systems Inc. plans to buy Health Management Associates Inc. for nearly $4 billion in a deal that would make it one of the nation's largest hospital operators and double its stake in Missouri's rural hospitals.

The proposed purchase would include newly built Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, a key provider of health services to the poor in several rural counties of southeast Missouri.But the acquisition is still subject to the approval of Health Management Associates' shareholders and also must pass the antitrust review of the Federal Trade Commission, which has cracked down in recent years on hospital monopolies in smaller cities and communities.

The deal also comes at a time when the hospital industry is topsy-turvy with changes brought by the Obama administration's health reform law.
