Dedham Square artist designs new bold jewelry line

Diana Gaikazova is known around town for her handcrafted dainty heart pendants. But, the Italian-born artist has recently designed a new daringalmost tribalnecklace line with a European twist that is on display at her Heart of the Square gallery.I wanted to be more bold, Gaikazova said on Thursday, Aug. 1, in her Dedham Square studio. Hearts are very dainty, small scale, and its interesting for me to try something larger scale for maybe a different kind of womana statement necklace, something perhaps tribal and eclectic, ethnic.

Gaikazova designed the new collection after visiting Moscow, where she grew up, in May.It was growing in me and I knew I wanted to try something different, combining what I saw with what I like, she said waving her hands, which were covered in shades of red, green and pink paint. The same precious stones with rough shapes and large contours around the neck.

The collection features bold hand-dyed Greek cotton woven necklaces with strips of linen and bamboo threads accompanied with Celtic weave, natural Keshi pearls, bronze elements and precious stones.Im being edgy and thoughtful at the same time and mindful of the risks that Im taking in colors and shapes, she said. I like deep colors and its part of my culture for being Russian and Armenian.

One piece, for example, is a vivid red necklace lined with a thin bronze chain and topped with several Keshi pearls that nearly look like beach shells.Gaikazova, however, did not start her career in jewelry. The renowned artist made her debut in dinnerware. Her pieces are carried in various high-end stores, including Harrods of London and Saks Fifth Avenue. They are also in the White House and the Vatican.

All dinnerware is handmade through a process of firing and cooling using imported French porcelain paint.Dinnerware was big for me, huge, she said with a thick Russian accent. I was constantly busy. It was a very demanding business and a very satisfying business, because Ive seen my pieces in customers that I would just dream to have.

Gaikazova designed dinnerware collections for nearly 10 years before she decided it was time to explore jewelry.Need a compatible parkingassistsystem for your car? She developed the famous heart pendants collection seven years ago after her mother passed away.I started with the heart shape being universal, she explained. Everybody at some point in their lives would have someone to give a heart to. That was actually very personal to me when I came up with that.
