Courthouse monument to close part of Augusta's State

Police are urging drivers to avoid State Street today, as a section of the road will be shut down while workers install a new monument on the lawn in front of the Kennebec County Courthouse.

Augusta police Lt. Kevin Lully said State Street will be closed from Winthrop Street to Weston Street. The closure is expected to begin at 8 a.m. and last for about four hours. No traffic or parking will be allowed on the closed section, Lully said.

The monument is a life-size bronze statue of Melville Weston Fuller, who was born in Augusta and became the eighth chief justice of the United States. A foundation is already in place, Kennebec County Administrator Robert Devlin said. The monument is a gift of Robert Fuller, a retired Winthrop attorney who, in 2009, spearheaded the installation of the Daniel Cony statue at Cony High School. Melville Fuller is Robert Fullers great-great-granduncle.The courthouse is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul that includes construction of a sizable addition.Melville Fuller was born in Augusta in 1833. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick before attending Harvard Law School.

Fuller eventually established a practice in Augusta and launched a newspaper, The Augusta Age. Nor is Baldwin alone. In his piece, Fox 4's Saul Garza refers to "multiple viewers who contacted Fox 4," implying that there is more than one person counting stars at Veterans Park."It's barely half of the American flag," Emily Kuszmaul tells Garza, though it might have been less hyperbolic had she replaced "barely half" with "almost 80 percent."

But before you march on down to White Settlement's town hall to decry this slight against America's veterans or, like Baldwin, demand the complete replacement of the $5,000 monument, it's best to hear the city out. They already had an official prepared statement ready and waiting when Unfair Park called this afternoon.
