Yvonne Parker brings unbridled artistry

Imagine a sculpture made of items such as tangerine-colored ash trays, occupied Japan figurines, plastic fruit and colored tile fragments. Now picture it 6 feet 2 inches tall.

Or, you could just visit the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, where Yvonne Parkers sculptures, assemblages and mixed-media collages are on display.

The human-scale Flight of Fantasy is the most massive piece Parker has created. She worked on it off and on for about two years. As with all her art, it started with the materials.

Parkers components look as though shes raided a Victorian parlor, but in fact she finds most of her materials at flea markets and antique stores and fairs. The tiles in Flight of Fantasy were rescued from the demolition of a West Palm Beach tile store.

The search is a tactile process. I need to be close up, feeling the essence of the piece, she said.

Her favorite materials are antique painted porcelain and vintage ceramics, often combined with her hand-crafted ceramic flowers and abstract forms. As she works, ceramic birds, animals, flowers, shells and figurines, salt and pepper shakers, lace, teacups, borrowings from Italian and French Renaissance paintings and figurative hybrids are transformed into art, which is why she calls her show Transformations, she said.

She builds her sculptures by affixing the pieces to a foundation. The adhesive can be as thick as 6 inches, which allows for a range of surface depths. She smooths the transitions between elements with grout. In a new all-white series, she coats the pieces with plaster, eliminating color to concentrate on form.

Her collages often are encased in curved antique glass rimmed with vintage frames. The glass is an integral part of the work, because she affixes the collage components to its surface. It creates an incredible luminosity you wouldnt get with mere collage, she said.

As her work evolves, her collages are becoming more painterly, increasingly incorporating acrylic paint and encaustic,The whole variety of the brightest smartcard is now gathered under one roof. and her sculptures more free-form, the artist said.

For spring exhibitions we look for shows that are fresh and surprising, said Cynthia Palmieri, the gardens executive director. For example, three years ago the organization displayed works by local artists that were made with materials found in the gardens. What I find so fascinating about Yvonnes work is that its so unbridled, Palmieri said, pointing to a wall piece in which a soup tureen cover blooms over a figurine of an 18th century dandy.
