Smartphone app helps drivers find available parking spaces

A smartphone parking app now provides real-time information to drivers about the availability and cost of parking in Downtown L.A. ParkMe, a Santa Monica-based company, says it aims to "help optimize transportation operations and alleviate the parking woes of Los Angeles County" by providing customized parking information.

ParkMe's app can be downloaded on an iPhone or used via their website. It uses a constantly updating, color-coded map of DTLA to show drivers where parking is, how much it costs and how easy it would be to find a spot at that location. Its features also include directions to your chosen parking location and a "Parking Timer" that helps you keep track of the minutes left on your meter.

“Born and raised in Los Angeles, I have spent years relying on luck to find a parking spot. Now I can use technology,” said Sam Friedman, CEO and co-founder of ParkMe.

The ParkMe app helps narrow its search for each individual driver by asking a few basic questions: Do you drive a car, SUV or motorcycle? Would you rather park closer to where you're going or park somewhere cheaper? It also updates availability and pricing based on the how long you are going to be parked for.

According to a statement from ParkMe, the company is also involved with L.A. Express Park -- the pilot program that debuted in downtown L.A. in May that uses in-ground sensors to inform drivers on where available street parking is. Express Park was launched by city officials to help ease traffic, pollution and driver frustration in the city -- and ParkMe said they were recruited to help "increase the program's spot-finding abilities."

In what ParkMe claims is the "largest parking database in the world," the company is already providing parking information for multiple major cities across the U.Installers and distributors of solar panel,S. including New York, Austin and Seattle, and has just added Santa Monica to their list of coverage cities as well.

Federal mediators are back, but that doesn't mean much. They have a spotty record at best working with professional sports leagues. And fans are sick of watching millionaire athletes argue with billionaire owners over money at the expense of the people who help make them rich.

It's all looking like a bad rerun. Legitimate disagreement over contract terms and division of revenue has turned into a battle of egos between NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHL players' representative Donald Fehr. The search for a legitimate bargain has become a win-at-all-costs blood sport.

Last week,Find detailed product information for howo spareparts and other products. Fehr called a news conference to announce that a deal was "in sight." Insiders say the statements caused Bettman to throw a tantrum. Fehr had to hurriedly call a second news conference to back away from the first one. It's a mess.

The NHL has canceled games through the end of December, but there is thought that an agreement in the next few days could salvage a 48-game season -- is roughly 59 percent of a normal one -- and all of the playoffs. That is the best scenario hockey fans and local economies like San Jose's can expect. But cancellation of the entire season is a real threat. The NHL, with Bettman at the helm, did just that in 2005, and there's a better than 50-50 chance it will happen again. It's doubtful that the NHL would try to play a season starting any later than January. It's now or never.

This lockout hurts many more people than the players, the owners or even the fans. People who make part of their living because of the NHL do not have strike funds or mounds of cash on which to rely. And it's not just restaurants, sports bars and other peripheral businesses whose employees suffer. It's hockey and arena employees, security and sales people, ushers -- most of them people making modest incomes in the best of times. They are at the mercy of the rich folks at the top of the sports employment pyramid.
