For David Mills, who runs the design agency Haughton Design, getting involved at the early stages is critical for everybody concerned.

"Very early in the process, we talk to the toolmaker, the moulder and even the automation people," he says.

This close collaboration can lead to more creative solutions to product problems. He cites a recent example, for a part that demanded a consistent moulding with no warpage or internal stress.

"We got an additives supplier involved and added a blowing agent to the material," he says.

When the material was injected, the mould fill was slightly short - but the blowing agent helped to expand the material, which completed the filling.

"We lost some aesthetics, but this wasn't important," he says. "The customer wanted function over final finish. The idea for the blowing agent came through the collaboration."

Getting everybody around the table at an early stage builds mutual trust, fosters the sharing of ideas and ensures that clashes between design and manufacture are avoided.

"Industrial designers can get very possessive if a project stays in the design phase for too long," he says. "If they're constantly talking to the moulder, they are more willing to change the design at this early stage - which makes it easier to mould at the end."

This is not to say that designs should deliberately be simplified for the sake of manufacturing. Mills is different to most design agency bosses, in that his background is in manufacturing rather than design. But he says that the designer's flair and creativity must be balanced with practicality.

"Manufacturers sometimes ask for designs that are dead simple to mould, so they can knock out parts like they're shelling peas," he says. "But you need a balance, otherwise you get boring products with no style or aesthetic appeal."

An example might be to avoid using a mould with side cores, which would add cost and complexity to a project. Garza has some simple advice for anyone wanting to have their catch of a lifetime become a permanent display for others to share.

“One of my biggest challenges was this year when a guide brought in a 31-inch redfish that he had forgotten about and had left in his freezer for two years,” he said. “The tail had not been wrapped and there was a lot of freezer burn all over it. This was a 10-pound fish with an 18-inch girth that still had the tail of a mullet it had swallowed sticking out of its mouth. We were able to salvage the fish, but it just doesn't look as good as it should if it had been properly preserved.”

The taxidermist said that any angler interested in a quality trophy using the skin of the fish should start the careful handling when the lunker is still on the hook.

“We really get creative with their fish,” he said, explaining that flickering flames, slogans and scenery are all part of the artistic creations on the replicas of large and small fish that decorate the restaurants' walls.

“Just like with the trophies for anglers, we start with the white mold and paint it black. Then we use steel wool to buff off the black paint, leaving only traces in the creases and lines.”

That black base is painted over with the fish's natural colors and gives the trophy a three-dimensional look, Garza said.

Firing up a new venture

What started out as a hobby for Aimee Gurtis has turned into a new business venture called Whim Wham Pottery and Art Studio in Ormond Beach.

The studio, at 378-B West Granada Boulevard in the Granada Plaza shopping center, welcomes walk-ins to sit down and paint their own pottery pieces.

The pieces, ordered from vendors, are already made and ready to be painted with glazes and fired in a kiln. Customers also have the option of making their own pieces using wet clay. Other projects are also being offered such as glass fusion, mosaics and tie-dye.

The studio has five employees, but Gurtis may be hiring more depending on how many children are registered for the camp activities being offered over the summer.

The summer camp is one strategy Gurtis is using to attract customers.

Gurtis, a first-time business owner, said she decided to open her shop after visiting similar art studios with her children and seeing how people of all ages enjoyed doing the crafts. She said it was a combination of seeing how much fun her kids were having as well as how much she enjoyed the activity that made her realize what a great idea it was for a business.

She said she wants her own studio to offer a relaxing and fun environment that's welcoming to people of all ages and levels of artistic ability.

She said she has been taking art classes for most of her life and that it has always been something she enjoys doing.

"It's a mix of all the things I enjoy and know how to do," she said.

Gurtis earned a degree in marketing and public relations from the University of Central Florida and worked for the Council on Aging of Volusia County before quitting to become a stay-at-home mom to her three children several years ago.

Gurtis came up with the name Whim Wham from a project she worked on while studying marketing and public relations. It was originally the name for a made-up coffee shop that her class project was based around.

Gurtis, who has been an active member in Junior League since 2006, hosted a Ladies Night for the volunteer organization at her shop April 26 as a test run.

Since launching her business, she has joined Ormond Beach Main Street and Ormond Beach Mainstreet Arts District. Gurtis said she is also planning on joining the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Ned Harper, director of the Small Business Development Center at Daytona State College, said hobby businesses, such as Gurtis's, are able to thrive even in this economy if they are able to market themselves properly and make the community aware that they exist.

Setting prices that are too high can chase away potential customers, but setting them too low can make it difficult for a business to turn a profit.
